As the new high school swimming and diving season approaches, many are wondering what to expect from the Los Gatos High School team. With a strong reputation and a history of success, there's no doubt that the team is ready to make waves once again.
To give us a sneak peek of what's to come, we caught up with Coach Jim Deming, who has been leading the team for the past 10 years.
Coach Deming's vision for this season is simple: for everyone on the team to achieve their personal best times. With 30 seniors leading the way, the team is in good hands. Additionally, there are 35 returning varsity members, 12 of which are 2023 CCS competitors, and 4 who have competed in the 2023 CIF State Championships. This level of experience and talent is sure to push the team to new heights.
But it's not just the returning athletes who are making waves. Coach Deming proudly shares that there are 3 freshmen who have been placed on the varsity team based on their impressive time trial times. With their contributions in individual events and relays, they are expected to make a significant impact on the team's success this season.
Leading the team as captains are Karissa Elliott, Karly Frangieh, Max Reese, and Connor Sullivan for swimming, and Ava Lazovsky for diving. These individuals were chosen because they exemplify what the Los Gatos High School Swimming and Diving Team is all about – hard work, dedication, and passion for the sport.
Coach Deming emphasizes the importance of setting goals for the season, and encourages all athletes to challenge themselves to be the best they can be. This mindset is crucial in the highly competitive league the team is a part of. The Santa Clara Valley Athletic League – De Anza Division is known for being one of the toughest leagues in the California Central Coast Section (CCS). With some of the fastest teams in the CCS, every meet is a great test of the team's abilities, making for an exciting and intense competition.
But it's not just physical abilities that are important in swimming and diving, the mental aspect plays a huge role as well. As the season progresses, Coach Deming and his team focus on techniques such as visualization and effective preparation for the end-of-season races. It's this attention to detail and mental strength that has helped the team excel in previous years.
