Leuzinger High School, located in Lawndale, California, is gearing up for an exciting season of softball. With a dedicated coaching staff and a talented group of players, the Olympians are ready to make their mark on the field.
We had the opportunity to speak with Coach Martin Jones to get a preview of what we can expect from the team this year. When asked about the overall goals for the team, Coach Jones shared that they are focused on continuing their growth from the past several years and ultimately winning their league. But the key to achieving these goals? Commitment. Commitment to working together as a team, being accountable for their actions, and putting in the hard work and effort necessary for success.
There are several standout players to keep an eye on this season. Emily Gamboa, who plays shortstop, is described as an excellent player with the potential to play at the college level. Coach Jones also notes that she is the heart and soul of the team. Magaly Guillermo, the starting pitcher, is the ace and closer of the pitching staff. Her performance on the mound will be crucial to the team's success. Another player to watch out for is junior third baseman, Tyler Lewis, who is known for his hard-hitting abilities and has the potential to play at the next level.
The Olympians have three captains this season: Mya Lopez, Emily Gamboa, and Tyler Lewis. Coach Jones speaks highly of all three, stating that they consistently show the pride and dedication of an Olympian both on and off the field. These captains are seen as an extension of the coaching staff, showing strong leadership and setting a positive example for their team.
Team chemistry and camaraderie are important aspects of any successful team. Coach Jones shares that he incorporates this by involving the team in decisions about practices, allowing them to choose the time and focus of each practice. He also makes an effort to encourage team bonding functions. Additionally, he stresses the importance of life lessons and how being a part of the team can help players learn and develop skills that will be useful in their future career paths.
One of the biggest challenges the team has faced this season is adjusting to their brand new field. After two years of playing home games off-site, they are excited to finally be back on their home turf. This new field, along with the improved weight room, will undoubtedly be a valuable asset for the team.
