Eagle Rock High School's Boys' Volleyball team, coached by Michelle Hancock and her assistant Mathieu Mahinan, is entering the new season with high expectations. With a strong and experienced team roster, they have set their sights on defending their 14-year streak winning their local league and adding an Open Division championship to their list of achievements. In this exclusive interview, Coach Hancock shares her thoughts on the team's goals, key players, and the importance of team chemistry and mental resilience in achieving success. At the heart of the team's goals is their desire to continue their dominance in their local league and to secure the elusive Open Division championship. This goal requires a strong and cohesive team effort, and the key to achieving it lies in the hands of the top returning players from last season. These include senior Tom Altankhuyag, junior Caleo Osorio, and senior Jacob Reyes, who is also one of the team's three captains. Altankhuyag, standing tall at 6'6", brings a dominating presence as an outside hitter on the court. Osorio, another towering figure at the center position, will be sure to cause some havoc for opposing teams. Lastly, Reyes's experience as one of the top liberos in the City Section makes him a valuable asset to the team. While the returning players are essential to the team's success, there are also new players who are expected to make an immediate impact on the team's performance. One of them is senior Jaiden Abling, who will be taking on the role of setter this season. Abling's ability to consistently deliver high-quality sets from anywhere on the court and his strong connection with Altankhuyag make him a key player to watch out for. Aside from skill on the court, Coach Hancock also looks for specific qualities in potential team captains. This includes a commitment to being a leader both on and off the court. This season, she has chosen Altankhuyag, Abling, and Reyes as the team's captains, highlighting their leadership abilities and strong presence in the team. But it takes more than just skilled players and strong leadership to achieve success. Team chemistry and camaraderie play a significant role in the team's success, and Coach Hancock acknowledges that this is something the team has had for the past several years. The players' support for each other, whether in good times or bad, helps create a strong and united team.
