Dos Pueblos Boys Volleyball 2024 Season Preview (CA)

As the new season approaches, the Dos Pueblos High School boys volleyball team is gearing up for their biggest challenge yet - the pursuit of another Channel League Title. After consistently placing third in the league since their last title in 2018, the Chargers are determined to take down their rivals Santa Barbara and San Marcos and reclaim the top spot. I had the opportunity to speak with head coach Ehren Hug about the team's expectations, goals, and key players for this upcoming season. Coach Hug has been with the Dos Pueblos program since 2017 and has seen the team grow and improve over the years. When asked about his expectations for the team this year, Coach Hug highlighted the importance of aggressive consistency from the service line, a spread offense, and a loud and relentless defense. "Those will be the keys this season on our road to first place in Channel League," he said. The team's ultimate goal, however, is to make it to at least the semi-finals of the Division 2 playoffs and potentially bring back a CIF banner. Despite being defeated in the quarter-finals of D2 last season and D3 in 2022, Coach Hug believes that the team has the talent and determination to go further this year. "To end the season with a win and a series of victorious photos with everyone putting up the #1 finger would be a dream come true," he shared. One of the standout players on the team is UC Irvine commit Micah Goss. After a stellar club season, Goss unfortunately suffered an injury that cut his season short. However, he is now back in action for his final high school season, and Coach Hug describes him as a "weapon" on the court. With his incredible athleticism and ability to play both front and back row, Goss is expected to have a major impact this year and continue his success at the collegiate level. Another key player for the Chargers is senior captain and libero Ezekiel Tynes. Coach Hug describes him as a "no holds barred" defensive player who consistently gives his all on the court. After improving his serve receive passing and service game, Tynes is expected to be a crucial player for the team this year. Senior outside hitter Jan Schmidtchen, also known as "The Flying Dutchman," is another standout player returning to the team this season. Coach Hug praises his ferocious jump serve and his ability to "drop the hammer" on high balls.
