As high school sports kick into gear for the spring season, all eyes are on the San Clemente High School girl's lacrosse team. With a strong year under their belt, this young team is ready to take their game to the next level and make a statement in their league and in the CIF Championship. I had the opportunity to speak with Coach Josh Cain about the team and their goals for the upcoming season. He expressed his excitement for the team, stating that their main goal is to build upon last year's success and make an even deeper run in the playoffs. With a young squad, mostly comprised of sophomores, the team was able to make it far in the season. Now, with more experience and maturity, they are ready to take on their competition. One of the key players to watch out for is junior Sophia Yeskulsky. She was the team's top scorer last year and is committed to playing at Colorado University. According to Coach Cain, Sophia's ability to win draws and dodge and shoot on offense makes her an almost impossible player to defend. Her twin sister, Charlotte, is also a force to be reckoned with on the field. She was the team's second-highest scorer and is also committed to playing at Colorado University. Her strengths lie in winning ground balls and creating turnovers in the transition game. With her improvement on the defensive end, she has become a major threat for the team. Another player to watch out for is senior Taylor Juncaj. Coach Cain describes her as one of the most difficult offensive players to defend due to her speed and high lacrosse IQ. With the departure of last year's graduating seniors, the team is expecting Juncaj to step up and fill an important role on the team. Despite the young age of the team, Coach Cain believes that they have a great deal of potential and talent, especially with the addition of new players to the varsity team this year. With more depth, the team is poised to make even more strides towards success. Coach Cain has high expectations for the returning players to step up with their training and leadership skills. In terms of team captains, the qualities Coach Cain looks for are caring, courage, and consistency. He believes that the captain must not only show caring for their teammates, but also for the sport and the team as a whole. They must have the courage to lead by example and push their team to achieve their goals.
