It's an exciting time of year for the Wichita Bishop Carroll High School volleyball team as they gear up for another season. This year, they have a group of talented and dedicated players who are eager to prove themselves and bring glory to their team and school. We had the opportunity to speak with their coach, Steve Harshberger, about the team and what we can expect from them this season.
When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Harshberger highlighted the skills and leadership of Cambell Riordan (Sr), Anistyn Marcotte (Sr), Lilly Martin (Jr), Desiry Segura (Jr) Allyson Orth (So), Kiersten Jones (So), Isabella Pfannenstiel (So), and Natalie Thimmesch (So). He also mentioned that their key to success will be their ability to handle stress and pressure in high-stakes situations. These players have proven their athletic abilities and will be crucial in guiding the team to victory.
Coach Harshberger also shared his thoughts on some new players who he believes will have an immediate impact on the team. With several returning players, the challenge will be finding the right chemistry on and off the field. However, with the addition of talented freshmen, the team is looking forward to seeing their impact during tryouts. When asked about qualities he looks for in potential team captains, Coach Harshberger emphasized the importance of leadership, both on and off the field.
He also mentioned that they do not declare "captains" on the team, rather leaders emerge over the course of the season through their actions and dedication. One of the team's main focuses this season will be building team chemistry and camaraderie. Coach Harshberger mentioned having squad leaders who lead their groups throughout the year, and the team leaves their egos at the door in order to work towards their common goal: success on the court.
In terms of motivation, Coach Harshberger's philosophy is "it's not about you, it's about the team." He believes that each player must leave their personal goals aside and work towards the success of the team. This mindset will help the players push themselves to their full potential and create a strong and cohesive team. As with every season, there are challenges to overcome. Coach Harshberger mentioned that one of their biggest challenges will be building confidence in high-stress situations.
