The Bishop Montgomery High School football team has high expectations heading into this season, and with good reason. Led by head coach Andy Marafino, the Knights are returning some top players, and have added some promising young talent to their roster. The team's top returning players from last season are receiver Cameron Brewer, center Austin Hillman, and defensive tackle Gustavo Veramendi. All three players have shown exceptional skills and leadership on and off the field, making them special assets to the team. Brewer, a junior, was named all-state and All-CIF last season and is considered one of the top receivers in the state of California. His great hands and exceptional athleticism have also led him to break several school receiving records. Despite being a quiet leader, Brewer leads by example through his hard work and dedication. Hillman, also a junior, is the starting center for the Knights and is a steady and smart player. His ability to anchor the offensive line and his consistent performance make him a valuable asset to the team. Veramendi, a junior, is projected to be a starting defensive tackle this season after primarily playing on the offensive line last year. He has shown great improvement in the off-season and is known for his strength and toughness on the field. Like Brewer, Veramendi is also a leader on the team due to his strong work ethic. In terms of new players, the Knights have a talented group that is expected to make an immediate impact on the team. Freshman Cameron Brewer, who is projected to be one of the team's top receivers, has already gained the respect of his coaches and teammates through his hard work and strength gains in the off-season. Other new players to watch include defensive tackle Chukwuagozie Akubuilo, defensive lineman Miles Hilliard, and receivers Quinn Adolph, Vince Aleman, and Nathan Horta. All of these players have shown great potential and will play an important role in the team's success. Aside from talent, the Knights also prioritize team chemistry and camaraderie. Coach Marafino believes that it is important to have players who are not only respected by their peers and talented but also hardworking and dedicated. This mindset is reflected in their captain selection, where Brewer was chosen as captain due to his qualities as a well-respected, talented, and hardworking player. As with any team, there are challenges in preparing for the upcoming season.
