As coach of the La Canada High School cross-country team, Steve Scarince has high hopes for his young team this upcoming season. With a mix of experienced runners and fresh talent, the team is ready to take on the challenges ahead and continue its tradition of success. Leading the pack of returning players is standout runner Maya DeBrouwer. With an impressive track record of achievements, including a 4th place finish at the California State Cross Country Meet and a remarkable 4th place finish in the 3200 meters at the State Track Meet, Maya's dedication and work ethic make her a key leader and motivator for the team. Her experience and leadership will be crucial as the team navigates the obstacles of this season and strives for continued success. But Maya is not the only returning runner with potential. The team also has four talented sophomores making their varsity cross-country debut. The transition into their new roles will be challenging, but their energy, speed, and endurance will make an immediate impact on the team's performance. As they gain experience and confidence, their contributions will become even more significant. When it comes to choosing captains, Coach Steve looks for strong leadership, organizational skills, and the ability to bring the team together. This year's captains, seniors Kelly Sellman and Maya DeBrouwer, have consistently demonstrated these qualities and set an excellent example for their teammates. Their strong leadership will be crucial in guiding the young team towards success this season. Team chemistry and camaraderie are essential for any successful team, and the La Canada cross-country team is no exception. The girls are a tight-knit group and regularly organize outings and social events outside of practice, building lasting bonds and a sense of belonging. These activities not only foster unity and support but also create a positive and enjoyable environment for the athletes. Motivating young athletes to push themselves to their full potential can be a challenging task. Coach Steve relies on open and honest discussions about their goals and the dedication required to achieve them. Celebrating small victories and providing continuous support and encouragement along the way helps the team stay focused and motivated. As for the biggest challenges this season, Coach Steve points to the loss of four of the top seven runners from last year's team. Filling these gaps will be a significant obstacle, requiring younger and less experienced runners to step up and take on more significant roles.
