McClintock High School Cross Country Team: Building a Strong and Competitive Team with a Focus on Camaraderie and Mental Performance
As another high school cross country season is upon us, we sat down with Coach Kylee Kieser of McClintock High School to get a preview of what to expect from the team this year. With a strong emphasis on team chemistry, mental performance, and athletic development, Coach Kieser shares her insights on the top returning players, new additions, coaching strategies, and goals for the season.
Last season, the McClintock High School Cross Country Team had a successful run with top finishes and personal records. This year, the team will continue to build on its success with a talented group of returning players. Coach Kieser highlights three standout athletes on the boys' team: Ezra, Roy, and Caleb, who are not only top runners, but also leaders on the team. They set the tone for hard work, team support, and accountability.
On the girls' side, Brooklyn, a sophomore, is noted as a strong leader who is dedicated to improving the girls' program. But it's not just about the top runners. Coach Kieser also emphasizes the qualities she looks for in team captains. She believes that a team-oriented mindset, a strong work ethic, and the ability to motivate and help teammates are crucial qualities.
On the boys' team, freshmen Cole and Victor are expected to make a significant impact. At the same time, sophomore Addaesin is a new addition to the running scene but has already shown her competitive drive and strong work ethic. To cultivate strong team chemistry and camaraderie among the athletes, Coach Kieser organizes team dinners before major meets.
This helps the team bond and develop friendships and creates a support system for the athletes. As Coach Kieser says, "Cross Country is a team sport and they rely on each other." By fostering a sense of unity and support within the team, the athletes are more likely to push each other to perform at their best. But it takes more than just team chemistry to succeed in cross country.
Coach Kieser emphasizes the importance of mental performance and its impact on performance. She believes that running is 90% mental and 10% physical and that mental and emotional well-being are just as important as physical health. To address this, the team has implemented a weekly goal and mental performance check, led by assistant coach Melissa Samuelson.
