As another fall sports season approaches, all eyes are on the Middletown High School cross-country team. With a young but talented group of athletes, the team is ready to take on the challenges of the Greater Miami Conference (GMC) and make their mark in the division. To get a better understanding of the team and their goals for the upcoming season, we spoke with Coach David Fultz about his expectations and his team's potential. The team's top returning players from last season are Junior Daniel Egelston and Senior Emanuel Muniz. Egelston, who had a successful track season last spring, has continued to shine over the summer and has emerged as the top runner for the team. Muniz, who is entering his senior year, is ready to step up and make a big contribution this fall. Coach Fultz praises both of these athletes for their hard work and dedication, and believes they will play a crucial role in the team's success. Despite having a small team with only nine runners, Middletown High School has managed to compete well in the highly competitive GMC. Coach Fultz is proud of his team's determination and resilience, mentioning that most GMC schools have 30-100 runners, making it a tough playing field for a small team like theirs. However, with their talent, focus, and hard work, the team aims to finish in the top four in the GMC meet this year, moving up from their fifth-place finish last season. Coach Fultz notes that with a younger team this year, the expectation is even higher, and they are ready to take on the challenge. In terms of new players, Coach Fultz highlights Junior Daniel Egelston and Senior Emanuel Muniz, who are both expected to have an immediate impact on the team. Egelston, as mentioned earlier, has had an impressive summer and has raised the bar for himself. As for Muniz, his hard work and determination over the summer have caught the attention of Coach Fultz, who believes he is ready to make significant contributions to the team this fall. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Fultz looks for certain qualities in his players. Unlike other sports where team captains are chosen solely based on skill and experience, Coach Fultz values characteristics such as leadership, teamwork, and dedication. These qualities are essential in creating a cohesive team and ensuring that all players work towards a common goal.
