As the new high school cross-country season approaches, all eyes are on the DeSoto High School team. With a long history of success and a dedicated coaching staff, expectations are high for this year's team. We sat down with Coach Julie Chidsey to get a preview of what we can expect from the DeSoto cross-country team this season. At the top of the list of returning players are the ones who were plagued by injuries last season. These returning runners are determined to come back stronger and improve upon last year's performance. The team has also gained new runners who are eager to make their mark, including girls Josselyn Lopez and Trace Barrera. Coach Chidsey highlights the dedication and determination of these new players as their biggest strengths. Both girls are committed to the sport and are willing to put in the hard work and effort needed to succeed at the high school level. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Chidsey looks for specific qualities in her players. She values those who are committed to the team's success and are more concerned about the team's improvement than their achievements. Currently, Uriel Maldonado is leading the pack as a potential team captain, impressing Coach Chidsey with his fast times and leadership potential. Building team chemistry and camaraderie is crucial for any successful team. Coach Chidsey acknowledges that this can often be a challenge with high school athletes, but she relies on the team's natural leaders to foster a positive atmosphere. By encouraging the team to work together and support one another, they can create a strong bond that will carry them through the season. Creating a positive and motivating environment is essential in pushing athletes to reach their full potential. The DeSoto cross-country team practices and travels together, reinforcing the idea of teamwork and collective success. Coach Chidsey believes in creating a positive atmosphere that encourages her athletes to keep pushing themselves and never give up. Like any season, there have been challenges in the preparation for this year's team. Coach Chidsey explains that one of the biggest obstacles they have faced has been injuries and players not participating in summer conditioning due to the heat. However, she stresses the importance of encouraging her athletes and reminding them that past successful runners have faced similar challenges and overcome them. When it comes to the team's schedule, Coach Chidsey acknowledges that there are some tough opponents they will face.
