Edison High School's cross country team is gearing up for an exciting season filled with new faces and a renewed focus on team chemistry and culture. Coach Greg Hass sat down with us to give a preview of the team's upcoming season, highlighting the top returning players, new impact players, team captains, schedule, and his coaching style. Coach Hass identifies two standout players from last year's team: senior Kai Hata and sophomore Avery Williams. Hata finished in the top 10 in the league last season and continued to show his promise during track season. He is determined to take his improvements from track and translate them into a top 5 finish in the Sunset League for cross country. Williams, on the other hand, already made a name for herself as a freshman by winning first place in the Sunset Surf League. As a multi-sport athlete, she is ready to make an even bigger impact this year. Both Hata and Williams have shown their dedication and hard work in their respective seasons. Hata's improvements in track season and Williams' success in her first year of high school cross country prove their determination and passion for the sport. These qualities, along with their talent, make them valuable assets to the team. Coach Hass also sees potential in freshman Maddy Rahkshani, who is making her varsity debut in her first ever race. Rahkshani has been training with Williams and is motivated by her family's legacy in the sport. Her brother, Brian, is currently a varsity runner for the men's team, and her other brother was a captain and varsity runner last year. Rahkshani is stepping into the role with confidence and is expected to make an impact as a newcomer. Team captains play an important role in setting the tone for the team and creating a positive culture. Coach Hass looks for qualities like leadership, dedication, and the ability to unite and motivate the team. This season, juniors Jack Egan, Olivia Trazo, and Sabina Kirgizbaeva have proven themselves as not only strong runners but also as amazing leaders. They are returning captains from last year and have earned their roles once again. One of Coach Hass' main goals this season is to create a positive team culture and to unify the team as a family.
