The St. Anthony High School girls' basketball team is gearing up for the upcoming season with high hopes and determination. After a successful season last year, the team is looking to make a run for the state title this year. We had the opportunity to speak with Coach Ray Bennett about the team's goals, returning players, new additions, team chemistry, and more in an exclusive interview for a preview article. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Bennett mentioned Kadence Lloyd, Laila Hughes, Dallyn Knox, and Anaya Tunu. Kadence Lloyd, a versatile player, is able to play multiple positions on the court and brings a unique skill set to the team. Laila Hughes is known for her speed and defensive tenacity, while Dallyn Knox has improved her shooting and work ethic, making her a valuable addition to the team. Anaya Tunu, a senior, brings leadership and improved perimeter skills to the court. Coach Bennett also highlighted Jordyn Washington as a potential team captain, praising her athleticism and play-making ability. When it comes to choosing team captains, Coach Bennett looks for qualities such as leadership, communication, and a strong work ethic. He believes that these qualities are essential in creating a cohesive and successful team. In terms of team chemistry and camaraderie, Coach Bennett plans on utilizing team bonding activities, both basketball-related and fun activities like movie nights. He believes that these activities will bring the team closer together and help them function as one unit on the court. When asked about motivating players to reach their full potential, Coach Bennett emphasized the importance of helping them realize that their high school years are a special time that will go by quickly. He also believes in setting high expectations and pushing his players to constantly improve and work hard. The biggest challenge in preparing for this season has been the team's late start. With only 8 players 5 of them playing a Fall sports season, the team has faced some hurdles in terms of preparation. However, Coach Bennett remains optimistic and is determined to overcome these challenges with hard work and dedication. The team's schedule for this season includes tough opponents that the St. Anthony High School girls are looking forward to facing. With a competitive mindset, the team is ready to take on any challenge that comes their way. Coach Bennett believes that playing against tough opponents will only make the team stronger in the long run.
