This season for Watsonville High School’s basketball team is on the horizon, and Coach Andre Bailey couldn’t be more excited. With a young and talented group of players, Coach Bailey is determined to build a strong foundation for the future of the team. In an exclusive interview, he shared his insights on the team's strengths and weaknesses, his coaching philosophy, and his goals for the upcoming season.
When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Bailey praised Max Aceves and Nate Aguilar for their impact on the team. Aceves, a junior, was the leading scorer last season, showcasing his impressive offensive skills. Aguilar, a versatile wing player, was the team's second-leading scorer and is expected to make a significant impact this season.
Coach Bailey highlighted their consistency as one of their biggest strengths, and their ability to perform under pressure. But Coach Bailey also has his eye on Diego Garcia, a promising sophomore who excels in running the floor, and Anthony Razo, who has the potential to be a formidable presence on the court as a rim protector.
When it comes to choosing team captains, Coach Bailey looks for players who lead by example, communicate effectively, and lift their teammates. Diego Garcia and Anthony Razo are currently in the running for this role. Developing team chemistry and camaraderie is always a top priority for Coach Bailey. He believes that effective communication, leading by example, and supporting each other are key to building a strong team dynamic.
In terms of preparation for the season, one of the biggest challenges has been adjusting to a new coaching style and implementing a change in the team's overall style of play. However, Coach Bailey is determined to elevate the team's level of consistency and overcome any obstacles to reach their goals.
As for the team's schedule, they will be facing some tough opponents such as Mission San Jose, Palma, and Salinas High. Coach Bailey also mentioned a tournament in Fremont and emphasized the importance of preparing the incoming freshmen for a “real” high school season. He hopes to challenge the team and expose them to different styles of play to develop and grow as a unit.
When asked about any changes or improvements to the team's training and conditioning program, Coach Bailey emphasized the importance of mental toughness. With many opponents being bigger, stronger, and more athletic, he believes that developing mental toughness is crucial for the team's success on the court.
