As the upcoming season for Redwood High School's wrestling team approaches, there is excitement and anticipation in the air. After a successful season last year, the team is focused and determined to achieve even more this year. With a new head coach, Jessie Ramirez, at the helm, the team is ready to take on the challenges that await them. Ramirez, who has been a pioneer for girls' wrestling in California, has high expectations for the team this year. When asked about the team's goals for the season, Ramirez said, "Our overall goals are to qualify individually for the State Championships, win the East Yosemite League, and win the D1 Championships." One of the key strengths of the team this year is the top returning players from last season. Ramirez highlighted the talents of Audrey Segura (155 lbs) and Jazrine Nieto (130 lbs), both of whom are returning state qualifiers. Segura is a three-time state placer and is looking to become a four-time placer this year. In addition to these top returning players, Ramirez also mentioned the strong leadership and potential of new players, especially Emily Carvalho (170 lbs), who was a state qualifier last season and placed sixth at Fargo this past summer. "She has also stepped in as a team captain this year," Ramirez said. When it comes to selecting team captains, Ramirez looks for players who possess qualities such as leadership, motivation, and dependability. This year's captains, Segura, Nieto, and Angelina Jimenez (145 lbs), along with Carvalho, have already taken charge and are determined to lead the team to success. Team chemistry and camaraderie are crucial for any successful team, and Coach Ramirez has made sure to prioritize it this season. He believes that "my team captains must be leaders. They have to take control of the team and make sure everyone is working their hardest." Ramirez's emphasis on working together and having the same goals and vision has led to a strong bond between the team members. Building mental toughness is also a key aspect of Ramirez's coaching philosophy. He motivates his players by pushing them through challenging workouts and teaching them the importance of mental preparation. "If you don't look tired, that can mentally affect your opponents," Ramirez said. He also stresses the importance of being intentional in everything the team does, whether it's during training or competing.
