As the new wrestling season approaches, the Live Oak High School team is gearing up for another successful year. After being moved up from the B league to compete in the A league, the team has set its sights on a successful season and reached its goal of competing at a high level. I had the privilege of speaking with Coach Heath Souza about the team's outlook and what fans can expect from them this year.
The team's top returning players from last season are senior Robbie Rael, senior Mateo Robledo, Junior Seth Henderson, Senior Jenna Howe, and Junior Aaron Saucedo. These players have had previous experience in state and CCS qualifiers, making them key contributors to the team's success. Coach Souza attributes their success to their commitment and dedication to the program as well as their ability to compete at a high level.
These players will be a crucial part of the team's performance this season. However, the team also has some new players who are expected to make an immediate impact. With the departure of last year's seniors, the team's coaches are looking towards Robbie Rael and Mateo Robledo to step up as leaders. The coaching staff is also keeping an eye out for other wrestlers who may rise and demonstrate leadership qualities.
One of the key factors in a successful team is chemistry and camaraderie. Coach Souza believes that team bonding events and activities outside of the wrestling room are important in building a cohesive team. By spending time together off the mat, the team can develop a stronger bond and support system which can translate into better performances on the mat.
To reach their full potential, Coach Souza believes in constantly motivating his players to push themselves. One of the ways to do this is by setting challenging goals and helping them achieve them. The team is also encouraged to focus on the mental aspect of wrestling, acknowledging that it is a vital element to success. With these strategies, the team is sure to put their best foot forward comes time for competition.
Speaking of competition, the team's schedule this season will be more challenging with the move to the A league. Coach Souza shared that their toughest opponent will be Gilroy High School, known as a powerhouse in wrestling. This means that the team will have to work harder and be prepared for the tougher competition. But with hard work, determination, and the right mindset, the team is ready for the challenge.
