As the St. Anne's Belfield School boys' basketball team gears up for the new season, fans and supporters can expect to see a strong and determined group of athletes take to the court. With their eyes set on a State Championship, the team is ready to put in the hard work and dedication necessary to achieve their goals.
Leading the team is a group of talented individuals, including Chance Mallory, Austin Williford, and DZ Bullock-Coles, all of whom are D1 commits. These players are returning from last year's State Championship runner-up team and are expected to make an immediate impact on the team. Alongside them is Cody Gordon, a transfer from St. Stephens and St.
Agnes in Northern VA, who should have a significant role in the backup point guard position. Coach Damin Altizer, who has been leading the team since 2018, believes that team chemistry and camaraderie are crucial for success. He values selflessness and sacrifice from all players in achieving the team's ultimate goal. This perspective is reflected in the team's choice of captains, seniors Chance Mallory, and Austin Williford, who are expected to lead by example and bring the team together.
To build team chemistry, the players participate in various team bonding activities throughout the year, including top golfing, dodgeball in practice, and community service projects. These events not only bring the team closer but also teach valuable lessons in teamwork, communication, and leadership. Coach Altizer is also well aware of the importance of motivation in pushing players to reach their full potential.
He believes that self-motivation is a vital trait for a team to have, but also acknowledges the need for external motivation. The team collaborates with ADAPT Training, a sports performance group in Charlottesville, VA, to stay in top physical shape for the season. The biggest challenge in preparing for this season has been maintaining focus and staying motivated after last year's loss in the State Championship game.
However, Coach Altizer's approach of focusing on one game at a time and being present in the moment has helped the team stay on track and not get too caught up in the pressure. This season's schedule includes tough opponents such as Davidson Day, JL Chambers, The Webb School, and Huntsville, to get back to the State Championship and win it.
