As the new season approaches, there is a buzz of excitement around Sherwood High School's basketball team. They have big goals for this season and with a lot of experienced players returning from last year, they have a strong foundation to build upon. I had the chance to sit down with Coach Rahim Tufts to get a preview of the team's upcoming season. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Tufts quickly pointed out the importance of playing together and taking care of the ball. But he also highlighted a few key players who will surely make an impact on the team's success. One of those players is Connor Parry, a multi-sport athlete who "just gets it" and has a knack for creating opportunities for both himself and his teammates. Brady Hix, a sharpshooter and creator, has added some muscle to his frame which will only make him more dangerous on the court. Ben Everhart, a 6'6" post, brings high-level shot-blocking skills while Walt Rosenburg, also a 6'6" post, has impressive footwork and touch. Brody Rygh, a 6'5" wing, is a versatile player who excels in rebounding, shooting, creating, and defending. Noah Williams, a shifty point guard, is a skilled playmaker with a talent for rebounding. And finally, Avery Johnson, a sophomore with incredible athleticism, is a force to be reckoned with on the court. As for team captains, Coach Tufts looks for players who not only lead and motivate vocally but also have the respect and following of their teammates. This year, Walt Rosenburg has been chosen as the team's captain. Chemistry and camaraderie are crucial for a successful team. Coach Tufts has emphasized the importance of having high-character players who have a pulse on the team and program. To build on this, the team will participate in various team-building activities throughout the season to become the most "hugging" team in the state. Motivating players to reach their full potential is a challenge that every coach faces. However, Coach Tufts shared that through one-on-one conversations and building a strong sense of belief in each other, his team has the drive and determination to push themselves to their limits on the court. Preparing for the season also has its own set of challenges, especially with a new group of players.
