With the new bowling season fast approaching, we caught up with Coach Anton Carrera from West Orange High School to get a preview of what fans can expect from the team this year. Coach Carrera shared his thoughts on the team’s goals, returning players, new additions, team leadership, and challenges for the upcoming season. He also gave us a glimpse into his coaching style and any changes or improvements that have been made to the team’s training and conditioning program. The team’s overall goal for this season is to remain competitive and improve on their record from last year. Coach Carrera expressed that the team had great opportunities to split games with opponents last season, but believes that with more practice and focus on the lanes, they can produce better results this year. Returning to the team are two captains who made the SEC team last season, giving them valuable experience and leadership on the team. Coach Carrera also mentioned another player who has the potential to bowl a solid average and contribute to the team’s success. These players will undoubtedly play a crucial role in the team’s performance this year. In terms of new players, Coach Carrera highlighted Jay Stevenson, Jordan Brister, and Gabe Smith as potential game-changers for the team. These three Grade 11 students bring a fresh perspective and skillset to the team and are expected to make an immediate impact on the lanes. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Carrera looks for players who possess strong leadership qualities and have a positive attitude both on and off the lanes. This year, the team has four players vying for the role of captain: Alex Kranz, Nina Alvarez, Sebastian Jo, and Max Stevenson. These Grade 9 and 10 students have already shown potential and the team will benefit from their leadership and guidance throughout the season. Preparing for the new season has had its challenges. Coach Carrera emphasizes the importance of open communication with his players and creating a conducive environment where they can voice their concerns and work through any issues that may arise. He also implements a focused training program that includes specific tasks, such as 7 & 10-pin games, to improve the players’ skills and performance. In terms of competition, West Orange High School’s division is tough, with many strong teams to face. However, Coach Carrera remains optimistic and hopes that the team can be competitive against all their opponents this season. One aspect that has always been a focus for the team is mental strength.
