Coach Chandler Burgay has high hopes for the Timpson High School track team this season. With a young and successful team from last year, Coach Burgay is looking to make it to the state meet with as many athletes as possible. The team boasts four returning runners who will play a big part in their success this season. Cayt Jackson, Maliah Norris, Tiarra Scourton, and Taylor Stewart are all regional qualifiers and medalists in various events. These athletes bring experience and talent to the team, making them special in their own ways. In addition, Coach Burgay is excited about the potential impact of new runner Madison Grigsby, who will be competing in events where the team lacks depth. With a strong group of returning and new runners, the Timpson High School track team is poised for success. When it comes to choosing team captains, Coach Burgay focuses on the importance of every member pulling their own weight. He values team chemistry and believes that everyone has a role to play in the team's success. While Madison Grigsby may take on a leadership role this season, Coach Burgay does not put emphasis on one or two designated captains. To promote team chemistry and camaraderie, Coach Burgay plans on using their second year together in a new system to their advantage. He believes that familiarity and shared experiences will bring the team closer together. He also emphasizes the importance of success as a motivator for the team. In terms of motivation, Coach Burgay believes that the success and failure from last season will be enough to push the team to its full potential this year. He also relies on the mental and physical growth of the athletes to drive them towards success. One of the biggest challenges in preparing for this season is the short amount of time and low numbers due to many athletes being multi-sport competitors. However, the team remains determined to make up for lost practice and preparation time. One change in this year's schedule is intentionally competing in track meets with larger schools to challenge the team and simulate a regional meet. Coach Burgay believes this will better prepare the team for their ultimate goal of making it to the state meet. The team's training and conditioning program focuses on making everything as realistic as possible and competing at a high level every day. Coach Burgay believes that mental preparation is just as important as physical training. The team's strengths lie in their previous successes and the experience of their returning runners. However, Coach Burgay also recognizes the need to improve in certain areas such as participation in specific events and prioritizing health and rest. He believes that if the team can master these aspects, they can achieve their goals. Overall, Coach Burgay's coaching philosophy centers around preparing his athletes both mentally and physically for each competition. He believes that success is achievable through hard work, dedication, and a focus on individual improvement. With this approach, the Timpson High School track team is sure to have a successful season.
