The Greenbrier Christian Academy softball team is gearing up for another season full of potential and growth. With a mix of experienced returning players and promising new additions, the team is ready to take on the challenges that lie ahead. Coach Kelly Gregory is entering her first season as the full-time head coach, after taking over mid-season last year when the team tragically lost their longtime coach to a lung condition. She has a strong understanding of the team's strengths and weaknesses, and is determined to continue the legacy of success and hard work that the previous coach instilled in the players. One of the top returning players from last season is senior Haleigh Murphy, who will be stepping into the circle as the starting pitcher. Coach Gregory believes that Murphy's hard work and dedication during the off-season have prepared her for this role, and she will be a key player in the team's quest for both the Metro Conference and VISAA Division III Championships. Senior Peyton Moran, who will be returning as the starting third baseman, is also expected to be a major offensive contributor for the team. In addition to the returning players, there are also some new faces on the team who are expected to make an immediate impact. Senior Peyton Moran will be sharing time in the circle and taking over first base, while sophomore Katelyn Balka will also be splitting time in the circle and playing first base. Coach Gregory has high expectations for Balka's offensive contributions as well. Freshman Cora Smith will be moving to shortstop this season and is expected to be a standout player both defensively and offensively. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Gregory looks for players who possess strong leadership qualities and are able to motivate their teammates to reach their full potential. Freshman Bayleigh Kaliher has already caught the coach's attention with her defensive skills and will be a valuable addition to the team at second base. Motivation is a key factor in pushing players to give their all on the field. The team's annual Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach is one of the ways Coach Gregory keeps her players motivated and focused. It's a chance for the team to bond and for the players to push themselves to improve their skills. Preparing for this season has come with its own set of challenges, as the team had to cope with the sudden loss of their previous coach. However, Coach Gregory has been working hard to keep the team focused and motivated, reminding them that their talent and skills are a gift from God and should be used to honor Him. The team's schedule for this season will be a mix of tough opponents and games that the players are looking forward to. Coach Gregory believes that facing strong competition is important for the growth and development of the team. She also mentions that many of the players are multi-sport athletes, with several of them coming from a basketball background, which adds an extra level of athleticism and competitiveness to the team. When it comes to the mental aspect of the game, Coach Gregory emphasizes the importance of not letting your performance define you. She encourages her players to focus on the controllable aspects of the game and to not let their worth be determined by the outcome of a game. As for the team's strengths and weaknesses, Coach Gregory acknowledges that there is still room for improvement offensively. However, she is confident that the players are up for the challenge and are committed to getting better every day. One of the team's strengths lies in the fact that many of the players are multi-sport athletes, which brings a diverse set of skills and experiences to the team. Coach Gregory's coaching philosophy is centered around continuous improvement. She believes in setting small, achievable goals and working towards them every day. Her focus on the controllable aspects of the game and the importance of team chemistry and support is reflected in the team's gameplay. The Greenbrier Christian Academy softball team is ready to take on the challenges of the upcoming season with determination and a strong work ethic. With a mix of experienced and new players, the team is poised to compete for championships and make their previous coach proud. Coach Gregory's leadership and guidance will undoubtedly play a crucial role in the team's success.
