As the new school year approaches, the Essex High School volleyball team is gearing up for another exciting season. I had the opportunity to speak with Coach Laken Shook about the team's preparations and expectations for the upcoming season. With a strong emphasis on team chemistry and determination, Coach Shook and her players are ready to make a run toward the state championship game. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Shook highlighted two seniors, Coen Giles and Patrick Jordan. Both players have been on the varsity team since their freshman year and have shown great leadership skills. Coach Shook believes that their experience and dedication will be crucial in setting the tone for the team this year. Additionally, she mentioned Greg Maiberger as a key player on the defensive end and Malx Eckman as a strong threat at the net. But it's not just about individual talent for the Essex High School volleyball team. Coach Shook stresses the importance of team chemistry and has implemented team-building activities and exercises to develop trust among her players. She believes that a strong bond off the court translates to success on the court. This season, the team will continue to work on their camaraderie and focus on determination. The selection of team captains is also an important aspect of team chemistry. Coach Shook looks for players who lead by example, putting in the time and effort both on and off the court. She believes that these individuals can set the standard for the rest of the team. While Coen and Patrick are expected to take on the role of captains, Coach Shook also has her eye on some upcoming freshmen who have shown promise and could potentially join the varsity team. Motivation is key in pushing players to reach their full potential. Coach Shook and her coaching staff have implemented various team bonding activities such as paintball, water parks, and team dinners to keep the players engaged and motivated. They have even worked with a sports psychologist in the past to help the players develop a strong mental game. Coach Shook believes that encouraging her players and providing positive feedback during practices will help them realize their full potential. But with every new season comes challenges, and the Essex High School volleyball team is no exception. Losing five seniors from last year's team poses a challenge for the upcoming season. However, Coach Shook is confident in the ability of her players to step up and fill those roles. With hard work and determination, the team is ready to face any challenges that come their way. Looking at the team's schedule for the season, Coach Shook acknowledges that they will face tough opponents. But she also sees it as an opportunity for growth and improvement for her players. With a strong focus on the next play and not dwelling on mistakes, the team is looking forward to taking on any opponent that comes their way. In terms of changes or improvements made to the team's training and conditioning program, Coach Shook emphasizes the mental aspect of the game. She stresses that volleyball is not just a physical game, but also a mental one. The team works on their mental toughness and resilience in practice, so they are prepared for any situation during a game. As the new season approaches, the Essex High School volleyball team is ready to take on any challenges that come their way. With a strong emphasis on team chemistry, determination, and mental toughness, Coach Shook and her players have set their sights on making it to the state championship game. With the support of their coaches, teammates, and fans, the Essex High School volleyball team is ready to make their mark on the upcoming season.
