Thu, April 10, 2025 at 04:04 AM . Florida
With the upcoming football season on the horizon, South Fort Myers High School is gearing up for another strong campaign under Head Coach Matt Holderfield. After making the playoffs last year but falling in the first round to Port Charlotte, the Wolfpack is focused on building strength and refining both offense and defense to match their evolving personnel. Offseason Focus: Strength and Tactical Adjustments A key priority for South Fort Myers this offseason has been increasing overall team strength and making strategic tweaks on both sides of the ball. With a playoff appearance already under their belt, the team is determined to not only return but also advance further in the postseason. Camps and Development Opportunities To prepare for the upcoming season, the coaching staff is taking older players to various recruiting camps while also attending the USF Sling and Shoot and OL-DL camps. These experiences will help players refine their skills and increase their visibility among college scouts. Roster Updates: Experience and Growth One of the biggest roster developments heading into 2025 is the now-seasoned defensive line. In 2024, four sophomores started on the defensive front, an area traditionally strong for the Wolfpack. The growing pains of last season have given way to confidence, as this now-experienced unit looks to anchor the defense. Players to Watch Quarterback Will Bichler returns to lead the offense after starting most of his junior season, despite missing four games due to an ankle injury. His receiving corps remains intact with key returners Josh Raphel and Jonathan Hernandez. The offensive line will be led by returning standouts John Kohles and Jeremiah Singleton. On the defensive side, linemen JaDell Carter and Cornelius Tims are back to solidify the front, while Isaiah Bernadel returns to command the secondary. The continued development of these key players will be crucial to the team’s success. Weight Training and Team Bonding The team has implemented a structured weightlifting program featuring five six-week cycles during the offseason. Afternoon workout sessions have also played a significant role in fostering team camaraderie and unity, which will be essential as the team faces a challenging schedule. Offensive Adjustments and Coaching Strategy The coaching staff continuously adapts their approach to fit their personnel. With Offensive Coordinator Sean Downing entering his second season, most of the adjustments this offseason have focused on fine-tuning the offense for maximum efficiency. Community Engagement and Off-Field Impact The Wolfpack has made a strong commitment to community involvement, with players volunteering at various outreach programs, assisting at feeder elementary schools, working concession stands for MLB Spring Training games, and reading to young students. These efforts have helped strengthen the connection between the team and the local community. Challenges and Key Departures Despite the team’s growth, challenges remain. South Fort Myers will need to replace last season’s leading rusher, Victor Jenkins, and top tackler, Rashaad Taylor, both of whom have moved on to the collegiate level. Additionally, a demanding schedule will test the team’s resilience and depth. Looking Ahead With an experienced defensive line, a seasoned quarterback, and a dedicated coaching staff, South Fort Myers is poised for another competitive season. The Wolfpack’s goal is clear: return to the playoffs and push past the first round. If they can capitalize on their offseason progress and overcome their challenges, they have the potential to make a deep postseason run.
