After a tough season in 2024 that saw just one match victory, the Vermillion High School Volleyball team is turning the page with a renewed sense of purpose, led by returning Head Coach Jodi Zeller and her staff, who are back after a three-year hiatus.
The team is focused, motivated, and ready to rebuild with heart, hustle, and high hopes for the upcoming season.
Offseason Focus: Starting with the Fundamentals
Coach Zeller has kept things simple but crucial in her return, focusing on serve receive and defense, the bedrock of a successful volleyball program.
“We’re working on our consistency and court awareness,” Zeller says. “If we can improve our first contact and stay disciplined defensively, we’ll put ourselves in a position to compete every night.”
Team Camps and Chemistry Builders
The Tanagers will be gaining valuable experience this summer through two key offseason camps:
Harrisburg Volleyball Camp
University of South Dakota Camp
These camps offer more than just reps—they’re about building chemistry, sharpening skills, and giving the team exposure to high-level competition ahead of the season.
Coaching Returns with Renewed Vision
One of the most impactful changes this offseason? Coach Zeller and her full coaching staff are back.
“After stepping away for a few years, it feels great to be back in the gym with these girls,” Zeller shares. “We’re reestablishing expectations, rebuilding the culture, and laying the groundwork for a brighter future.”
Players to Watch: Senior Leaders Ready to Shine
Keep your eyes on these standout seniors as they look to lead the Tanagers forward:
Josie Askew (OH/MH) – A versatile attacker with a strong presence at the net
Tessa Peterson (OH/RS) – Brings both power and experience to the front row
Their leadership, work ethic, and drive will be key for a team that’s hungry to flip the script.
Biggest Challenge: Changing the Narrative
There’s no sugarcoating it—Vermillion won just one match in 2024. But that reality is also fueling the fire for what comes next.
“We know where we’ve been,” Zeller says. “Now it’s about where we want to go. This group is ready to compete, learn, and grow. We aren’t focused on the past—we’re building something better every day.”
Looking Ahead: A Program on the Rise
With experienced coaches back in place, a group of determined seniors, and a clear focus on the fundamentals, Vermillion Volleyball is ready for a fresh start.
It won’t be easy, but this team has something to prove, and they’re stepping onto the court this fall with a whole new mindset:
Grit. Growth. And a hunger to win.
