After falling just short of a state title in 2024, the Classical High School football team is coming into the 2025 season with something to prove—and the tools to do it.
Led by Head Coach Kris McCall, the Purple have had a focused and intense offseason, with one goal in mind: finish the job.
Offseason Focus: Speed and Strength as a Foundation
Coach McCall emphasizes that this offseason has revolved around two critical areas:
Kyle training: honing position-specific skills and individual technique
Speed development: daily drills designed to build explosiveness and stamina
“We want to be faster, tougher, and more dynamic on both sides of the ball,” McCall says. “That starts in the offseason.”
Notable Return: Curtis Briggs Back in Action
A major story this year is the return of Curtis Briggs, who’s coming off a tough ACL injury and is expected to be a key piece of the offense.
He steps into the role vacated by star back Jordan Duke, and the coaching staff is confident he’ll be a breakout force in the backfield.
Players to Watch: Star Power Across the Field
Classical is stacked with talent, returning some of the top statistical performers in the state:
QB Parker Howley: Led Rhode Island in 2024 with over 2,500 passing yards
WR Jacoby Tavares: Ranked Top 10 in receiving yards with 600+
WR Silas McKay: Top 20 in receiving and also a leader in interceptions
DB Josiah Nyahkoon: Team leader and Top 20 statewide in INTs
OT Darryl Saint Clermont: Gave up just one sack all season—a cornerstone of the line
This balanced attack on both sides of the ball makes Classical a serious contender again in 2025.
Coaching Strategy: Playing Fast, Playing Smart
Coach McCall and his staff are shifting gears this year, with a focus on:
Uptempo offense to stress defenses early and often
Multiple defensive looks to stay unpredictable and adaptable
“We’re tailoring everything to our personnel,” McCall explains. “We have the speed, the football IQ, and the hunger—we just need to execute.”
Community Support and Lessons Learned
The team is also fueled by a sense of unfinished business. After falling short in last year’s Super Bowl, McCall believes a mix of internal egos and inconsistent support contributed to the outcome.
“We had too many Eagles in the room,” he says. “Now we’re locked in, unified, and supported by our families and community. That’s a game-changer.”
Biggest Challenge: Climbing the Mountain Again
With high expectations and a target on their backs, Classical’s greatest challenge might be mental—staying sharp, staying humble, and staying focused.
“We’re one of the better teams coming back,” McCall admits. “But that doesn’t guarantee anything. We’ve got to earn it all over again.”
2025 Outlook: Redemption Season
With a roster packed with returning stars, a revamped strategy, and a hunger to redeem last season’s heartbreak, Classical High is ready to reclaim its place at the top of Rhode Island football.
This fall, don’t be surprised to see the Purple back on the big stage—and this time, they plan to finish.
