As summer rolls in, the Tulare Union Boys Cross Country team is hitting its stride—both literally and figuratively—under the guidance of longtime coach Jeremy Monitz. With a strong group of senior runners and an intentional focus on strength, flexibility, and community, the Tribe is preparing for what could be a memorable season.
Offseason Focus: Building Core Strength & Reducing Injuries
This offseason, the program has doubled down on core work and flexibility training—key pillars for distance runners looking to enhance stability, build strength, and avoid injury. “We’ve made it a priority to develop the foundation of our athletes, and after two years of commitment, we’re finally seeing the results,” said Coach Monitz.
Coaching Staff Update: A New Face to Guide the Future
In a key offseason move, Coach Monitz brought in Assistant Coach Derek Smith, who will work closely with younger runners and help with their development. "Coach Smith brings great energy and is focused on helping our underclassmen grow within the program," Monitz added.
Athletes to Watch: Senior-Led Charge
This year’s team is packed with returning experience, headlined by a powerful senior group that’s already running sub-5-minute miles in track and working hard in the weight room. Expect to hear a lot about:
Julian Aguirre
Waylon Elliot
Ryan Rutledge
Oscar Sanchez
Alex Ruiz
Dereck Frausto
Tristan Jimenez
David Lopez
These runners form the backbone of a determined squad that’s already putting in serious offseason work.
Promising juniors Fernando Camarillo and Andres Regelado are stepping up as well, and sophomore Dillan Leon is a standout, having ended his freshman season as the team’s No. 7 runner on varsity.
Strength Training Pays Off
The Tribe isn’t just logging miles—they’re lifting, stretching, and building durability. “We’re not unique, but we’ve been consistent with our approach,” said Monitz. “Integrating weight room sessions and flexibility into our regular training has paid off, and we’re starting to see stronger, more injury-resistant athletes.”
Coaching Philosophy: A Culture of Community
More than just performance, Coach Monitz emphasizes character and community. “I want our athletes to understand that this team is a family, and we’re only as strong as our weakest link,” he said. “Running teaches life lessons—discipline, resilience, and how to overcome challenges without fear or complaint.”
Biggest Challenge: Training Without Hills
The biggest obstacle facing the team? Geography. “Our area is flat and hot,” Monitz said. “We don’t have access to many hills, and that’s always our biggest disadvantage when we compete on courses like Woodward or Mt. SAC.” To combat this, the team actively seeks out opportunities during the offseason to train on more challenging terrain when possible.
Tulare Union’s runners are focused, united, and ready to rise. With strong leadership, a growing culture, and a hunger to compete at the highest level, this season looks to be one full of grit, growth, and promise.
