The Harris County Cheer program is gearing up for what could be a historic season, fueled by intense offseason preparation, top-tier athlete development, and a growing commitment to excellence across all areas. Under the guidance of Head Coach Ashlyn Steele, the Tigers are embracing a mindset of grit, growth, and full-team buy-in. Offseason Focus: Tumbling, Strength, and Skill-Building Coach Steele says every athlete is enrolled in a tumbling class and participates in school-day weight training, setting a strong foundation for success. The team begins summer workouts in May, working drills and skills early to prep for competition season. Camps and Bonding: Laying the Groundwork Harris County will attend UCA camps at West Georgia and Kennesaw State in June, using the opportunity to grow in skill, confidence, and connection. Choreography camps for both competition and Gameday routines are also on deck, packed with team bonding and performance-building. “It’s an amazing time to get familiar with each other,” says Steele. New Season, New Elements This year marks the addition of the Gameday division to the cheer program—an exciting expansion that allows more athletes to shine and show school spirit in new ways. Athletes to Watch: Stacked Talent on the Mat Coach Steele highlights a lineup of standout athletes worth watching this year: Ava Kuebrich – A well-rounded athlete who turns heads with her skill and presence. Kat Newman – A rock-solid backspot and strong performer. Abigail Gilstrap – Incredible in jumps, tumbling, and basing. Kaylor Johannes, Delani Swan, and Emma Anderson – Flyers with show-stopping talent. Charlie Bonner – Known for performance energy and sharp execution. Emily Barnes – Beautiful jump technique. Coach Steele adds: “All of the kids who are on the mat are very good… If they made Varsity, it is very evident it was earned.” Strength, Mindset & Preparation Offseason training continues through weightlifting classes and intense summer work. The coaching staff also restructured tryouts this year—adding player-coach conferences to provide personalized feedback on placements, an effort to boost communication and development. Community First: Giving Back with Spirit Harris County Cheer continues to be a beacon in the community, hosting: A mini cheer camp A stunt clinic A special needs cheer camp Volunteering at local events like the community Easter egg hunt “We are always looking for ways to help in our community,” says Coach Steele. The Challenge Ahead: Staying Focused With a talented team and high hopes, the biggest challenge is mindset: “We have an incredible chance to do very well and possibly take home a state title if the work and execution are there.” Coach Steele emphasizes the need for 100% commitment from every athlete—even on tough days—because the potential is that high. “These kids know the why of what they are doing. We are so excited for the season!”
