As the offseason rolls on, the Springs Valley Cross Country program is laying the foundation for another strong year, one stride at a time. Offseason Focus Coach Derek Freeman emphasized that the team’s main goal during the offseason has been about consistency and creating a strong base for the athletes. “We really focus on building a solid base and team bonding,” he said. While the team shifts attention toward the track season, running remains central. “We continue to just build our base and consistency.” Special Offseason Events In terms of events, a few athletes may attend the Pacesetters camp at the end of June to sharpen their skills and deepen team chemistry. Additionally, the coaching staff is exploring the idea of a team camp in late July, though plans are still tentative. Notable Departures and Additions The team will certainly feel the absence of several successful seniors from last year’s squad. Among them is standout runner Carson Brown, who finished 11th in the state last fall—a remarkable accomplishment that set the bar high for returning athletes. Players to Watch Looking ahead, Coach Freeman has his eye on a few runners who could step into leadership and breakout roles. “I expect Dane Harris, Belle Roberts, and Addi Moffatt to be our front runners,” he said. These athletes have shown impressive dedication, staying committed to their base training and offseason preparation. Fitness and Fun The training isn’t all grind—Springs Valley is also keeping it fun. “We have Fun Fridays where we play games, and the kids love those,” said Freeman. It’s a small but impactful part of building a positive culture within the team. Nutrition and Health Focus Nutrition education is another key component. Athletes are encouraged to keep food journals, helping them and the coaches monitor dietary habits. “If something arises, we can look at [their journal] to see if there’s something we can change,” Freeman noted. Coaching Philosophy and Preparation With a younger team this season, Coach Freeman and his staff are doubling down on the fundamentals. “We’re really hammering home the details—consistent running, eating right, hydration, and sleep,” he said. The coaches are also continuously tweaking training plans to best fit their developing roster. Community and Fan Engagement While the offseason is quieter, the team remains connected to its fanbase primarily through social media, sharing updates, motivation, and glimpses into their journey. Biggest Challenge Ahead The challenge this season? Growth. “Just growing as a young team,” Freeman said. But with a strong culture, emerging leaders, and dedicated coaches, the Blackhawks are building toward a promising future.
