Shawnee Mission Northwest High School Soccer Season Preview

After a challenging 2024 season, the Shawnee Mission Northwest boys soccer team is refocused and reenergized heading into the offseason. Head Coach Drew Perkins, now entering his third season with the coaching staff, is emphasizing the essentials: fitness, technique, and building a resilient team identity. Offseason Focus: Getting Stronger, Getting Smarter The Cougars’ offseason efforts are built around strength training, fitness improvement, and technical development, to prepare each athlete to put their best foot forward at tryouts. “Our summer program is based on developing strength, improving fitness, and sharpening technique,” says Coach Perkins. “We want the boys ready to compete from day one.” Building Chemistry in St. Louis For over a decade, the team has made a tradition of traveling to St. Louis for a preseason friendly tournament. This summer is no different. “It’s three competitive games against teams we don’t normally face,” Perkins shares. “More importantly, it’s a great opportunity for the boys to bond and build chemistry.” Players to Watch: Leadership on the Rise A handful of returning players are expected to step into major roles this fall: Damien Flores Bennett Rau Steven Reyes-Mejia “These three will be key to our success. They’re experienced, motivated, and ready to lead,” Perkins notes. “We’re also excited about some younger players who are showing they’re ready to make an impact.” Coaching Mindset: Structure + Freedom Coach Perkins continues to evolve his coaching philosophy. “I’m working on striking the right balance between structure and individuality,” he explains. “This season, our goal is to create a tactical foundation the boys feel comfortable with—one that allows them to adapt and play with confidence.” Nutrition & Player Wellness While there’s no formal nutrition program in place, the coaching staff and athletic trainers focus on educating athletes about proper eating and hydration habits, especially during the grueling Kansas heat. Challenges Ahead: Rebuilding the Culture After a tough previous season, one of the biggest challenges the Cougars face is restoring a positive team culture and rebuilding momentum. “We’re focused on creating a supportive, competitive environment that lifts everyone,” says Perkins. “It’s all about turning the page and writing a better chapter this fall.”
