As the upcoming volleyball season approaches, Calvary Academy is embracing a season of transition and opportunity. Under the leadership of Varsity Coach Taylee Julian, the team is putting in the work to ensure that the 2025 season builds on the momentum of their historic 20-win campaign. Offseason Focus: Strength First This offseason, the program has zeroed in on physical development, particularly strength training. With the addition of a newly converted weight room on campus, players now have access to the resources needed to train at a higher level. “We’ve been focused on using our new weight room and improving our strength,” said Coach Julian. “We’re working to build not just better athletes, but a lasting culture of fitness.” Summer Events in the Works In addition to training, plans are underway for a summer tournament featuring Springfield-area schools. While still in development, the goal is to bring teams together for healthy competition and team bonding before the official season begins. Roster Shake-Up: New Faces, New Era Calvary is entering a new chapter with significant roster changes. The team graduated five seniors, leaving just three returning players from last year’s squad. But these three aren’t just returning—they’re leading the way. Ainsley Johnson is a standout who Coach Julian describes as “one of, if not the, best players in Central Illinois.” Despite being overlooked by the media, her stats and impact on the court speak for themselves. “Watching her play is going to be one of the highlights of my coaching career.” Kali Neatherton, now a sophomore, made a major impact as a freshman and has been relentlessly training to increase her vertical and refine her swing. “Her freshman numbers were outstanding, and I’m expecting even more this season.” Elesha Levine, a senior setter, is praised for her work ethic and leadership. “She’s one of the hardest workers I know, and the offense simply doesn’t run without her,” said Julian. The remaining spots will be filled by a talented incoming freshman class—athletes who have shown tremendous promise in junior high and could play major roles right away. A Weight Room with a Mission One of the most exciting developments is the team’s new weight room, funded by the school’s Champions Club. What was once a classroom is now a hub for year-round athletic development. “It’s more than just a space—it’s part of the culture we’re building,” Coach Julian shared. “This allows us to train at the level of top programs.” Looking Ahead: The Real Challenge Despite the excitement and talent, Coach Julian knows that the biggest challenge won’t come from opponents—it’ll be from within. “Last year, we had one plan and stuck to it out of necessity. This year, we have options—and that means finding the right combination of players who can play as one unit.” With a young, hungry roster, a reimagined training culture, and a committed coaching staff, Calvary Academy is ready to rise to the challenge.
