Lawton, OK – The MacArthur High School Cheer team is entering the 2025 season with a fresh leadership core, a renewed training approach, and a strong sense of community purpose. Under the direction of Varsity Coach Kathy Sauders, the squad is using the offseason to focus on conditioning, stunting, and developing the next generation of leaders.
Offseason Focus: Strength, Motion & Mechanics
The offseason blueprint has revolved around cardio and strength conditioning, with a key emphasis on refining motion precision, jump mechanics, and advanced stunting skills. “Our goal is to level up in every category — from fundamentals to performance execution,” says Coach Sauders.
Summer Camps & Team Bonding
The squad will attend NCA Cheer Camp at the University of Oklahoma, June 14–16, where they'll work with elite instructors and compete in skill-building activities. They'll also host a two-week Boot Camp at school in late June to boost conditioning and continue team bonding.
“This is a critical time to come together, sharpen our skills, and build the trust we’ll need throughout the season,” Sauders explained.
New Faces & New Leadership
With the graduation of all team officers, MacArthur Cheer is undergoing a leadership reset. In addition to new student leaders stepping up, the team is also welcoming Mrs. Sylvia Mahaffey to the coaching staff, bringing new ideas and a fresh perspective to the program.
“We’re excited about the energy Sylvia brings and the potential our younger athletes have to step into new roles,” Saunders added.
Players to Watch
While the roster is packed with rising talent, several younger cheerleaders are making waves as they work to level up their tumbling and explore school leadership opportunities. Their drive is evident in offseason practice, where they’ve been pushing to improve and find their voice within the team.
Training & Team Unity
Fitness-wise, the squad is diving into core training, jump-specific workouts, and even morning ab circuits. In a unique move, the coaching staff has also added yoga sessions and running drills to round out their approach, helping improve flexibility, stamina, and focus.
Two spring practices have already been held with the new team, each designed with team bonding and unity at the forefront. “We’re in the early stages of building chemistry, but it’s already coming together,” said Sauders.
Community Service: Giving Back Year-Round
The MacArthur Cheer team is making a lasting impact beyond the sidelines. In the past year, the squad has engaged in multiple service projects, supporting elementary schools, the Red Cross, Relay for Life, the Salvation Army Angel Tree, and more.
“This team understands that being a cheerleader isn’t just about stunts — it’s about uplifting the community, too,” Sauders emphasized.
Challenges Ahead: Youth and Leadership Development
The biggest hurdle for the 2025 season? Experience. “We’re a very young team,” Saunders admits, “and our biggest challenge will be helping these athletes grow into strong leaders quickly.”
But if early signs are any indication, this group is up for the challenge.
With fresh faces, a community-driven mission, and an evolving training plan, MacArthur Cheer is building something special — one rep, one stunt, and one smile at a time.
