The Lady Pacers of Grant Union High School had a season full of growth, heart, and competitive spirit, setting a strong foundation for the future of the program. Key Contributors Nerissa Hamilton (Senior): A quick attacker to the basket and a true leader on the floor, Nerissa took on an expanded role this season and flourished as captain. Jalaysia Clements (Senior): A high-IQ guard, Jalaysia was the team’s steady hand, consistently making smart decisions and running the offense selflessly. Ja’Niya Haley (Senior): A multi-sport athlete whose speed and pressure defense made her a key disruptor all season long. Asia Washington (Sophomore): With her graceful athleticism, Asia dominated the boards and led the team in double-doubles, showcasing a breakout year. Sophia Davis and Antrewlynn Clay (Seniors): Sophia brought connectedness and a deadly three-point shot, while Antrewlynn brought toughness and work ethic in her first year with the program. Season Overview Coach McCauley described the season as a good one with constant growth, emphasizing that while coaches always want "more"—more rebounds, more assists, more pressure—the development of the team was evident throughout the year. The Lady Pacers are building something special, season by season. Defining Moments Their final game of the year, seeded #15 against powerhouse #2 Sierra Pacific, showed the heart of the team. Although the game ended in defeat, the grit and seriousness displayed by the players stood out. It was a moment where preparation, effort, and belief in themselves truly came to the forefront. Player Development Asia Washington (#0): Emerged as a major force, putting up double-doubles regularly and growing into a leadership role. Nerissa Hamilton (#4): Expanded her leadership both vocally and through her play, becoming the captain and emotional engine of the team. Jalaysia Clements (#3): Continued to orchestrate the offense, ensuring her teammates were in the best positions to succeed. Responding to Challenges Whether it was tough losses or facing strong opponents like Atwater, El Capitan, or McClatchy, the Lady Pacers used each challenge as a learning opportunity, embracing the motto "iron sharpens iron." Losses turned into blueprints for improvement. Senior Class Impact The five seniors each left a unique and lasting legacy. From Ja’Niya Haley’s unmatched work ethic to Sophia Davis’s heart and three-point shooting, to Antrewlynn Clay’s competitiveness and the leadership duo of Jalaysia and Nerissa, this class helped push the program forward both on and off the court. Looking Ahead Coach McCauley is excited about the returning core, led by Keyara Lopa, Oranell Latham, Asia Washington, and Jhaedynn McCauley. With a solid foundation and hungry returners, the future is bright for Grant Union Girls Basketball. Offseason Focus Coach McCauley plans to use the coaching staff even more effectively, leaning into the strengths of the "dream team" of Coach Rowe, Coach Mac, and Coach Thomas. The team will focus on transition offense/defense, conditioning, and ball pressure to maximize their quickness and work ethic next season.
