The 2024-25 season was a historic one for Chowchilla Union High School Boys Basketball, led by Head Coach Don Smith. In a year defined by unity, perseverance, and execution, the team captured its first section championship in over 25 years, marking a major milestone for the program.
Team Chemistry & Key Contributors
Rather than leaning on one or two stars, the team thrived on depth and mutual respect. “We had many different contributors this season that made an impact at different times,” said Coach Smith. “It was a very close team that respected each other and the staff. That mutual respect and togetherness is what led us to the success we had this year.”
Season Highlights
The season was marked by a dominant finish, with Chowchilla winning 11 of their final 12 games. The team peaked when it mattered most, riding that momentum to a long-awaited championship.
Defining Moments
A clear turning point came with the start of league play in January. That’s when the team began to “execute at a higher level” and hold one another accountable, all while upholding the team-first culture that Coach Smith and his staff instilled.
Growth & Development
The senior class played a key role in the team’s success, particularly Zayne Smith and Khaled Escheik, who emerged as leaders during the season’s crucial stretch. “Our seniors, most of whom have played together since 5th grade, all had a major impact at different times,” Smith noted. Everyone embraced their role, however big or small, and executed it for the good of the team.
Handling Adversity
The team battled through illness and injury but never lost focus. Coach Smith highlighted that despite rotating starting lineups throughout the season, the team’s “work ethic and execution” never wavered, whether in games or practice.
Senior Legacy
With seven seniors graduating, this group leaves behind a legacy of leadership, humility, and accountability. “Everyone embraced their role, owned their part, and when that happens, it’s easy to coach,” said Smith.
Looking Ahead
Though graduation creates a gap, the future looks bright. “Luckily, we treat the JV level the same,” Smith explained. “They had a great season too, so we’re set up for long-term success.” The team will continue to focus on fundamentals and simplicity in the game—values that Coach Smith believes lead to strong execution.
