In his first year at the helm of the Ripon High Girls Varsity Basketball team, Coach John Scheid guided the squad from a near-bottom finish the previous year to TVL league champions, wrapping up an impressive 19-win season and going 11-1 in league play. “We took over a program that had a losing season,” said Scheid. “To finish first overall and go on an 11-game winning streak was a testament to this group’s heart and teamwork.” Key Contributors Ripon’s success was built on a balanced and committed roster. Point guard Kaylee Lehmkuhl set the tone, controlling the offense and making smart decisions throughout the season. Shooting guard Leila Sanches anchored the defense, often tasked with guarding the opponent’s top scorer, while also staying composed on offense. Forward Danika Escola was a force on the boards, regularly putting up double-digit rebounds. Additional key contributors included Shayla McKeon, who recorded two double-doubles, Anandjap Dhami, a sophomore who logged heavy minutes all season, and Scarlett Ponce, who added valuable support. Defining Moments The team faced early adversity, but things changed after adopting a quote from legendary coach John Wooden: “It’s amazing what you can accomplish when nobody cares who gets the credit.” That mindset shift fueled their dominant league performance and deepened the team’s bond. Senior Leadership The team was anchored by seven seniors, whose leadership was crucial to the development of their younger teammates, including five sophomores. “They mentored the younger girls and did an amazing job. They became close friends, and that chemistry translated on the court,” said Coach Scheid. Bright Future Looking ahead, Scheid is excited about the returning core. “The commitment these girls have is exciting. They want to put the work in,” he said. The focus this offseason will be on player development and increasing the team’s pace of play. Stats for the season can be found on MaxPreps.
