The 2024-25 season was a historic one for West Marion High School as it marked the launch of the school’s first-ever boys soccer program. While the team may not have secured a win on paper, their growth, resilience, and heart defined a successful and promising start to what will surely become a strong tradition. Key Contributors Senior Carlos Jimenes made school history by scoring the first goal ever for West Marion, a moment that will live on in the program’s legacy. His perseverance, having waited his entire high school career for this opportunity, set the tone for the team. Junior Jaxsen Crawford, despite limited prior experience, quickly became one of the squad’s most versatile assets, contributing in defensive, midfield, and forward roles thanks to his dedication and extra training. Season Overview Coach Lear called it a season that “went as planned.” While wins were elusive, the team showed fight and unity, gaining valuable experience. The highlight came in the very first match: a 1-1 tie against a well-established local city school, which injected the young program with confidence and belief. Growth and Development Throughout the season, the defensive unit showed exceptional growth. Cainen Martin stood strong in goal, never sitting out a single match. Defenders Branson Hawk, Tom Foster, Caleb Clark, and Joshua Eaton developed chemistry and discipline, learning to work together to protect the net as the season progressed. Handling Adversity Despite multiple injuries and some difficult losses—including a few by a wide margin—the team responded with grit and determination. Players stepped up to fill gaps, made strategic adjustments, and supported one another with a positive mindset. Senior Leadership Seniors Yael, Carlos, Branson, and Sam were pillars of encouragement and leadership for the younger players, instilling a foundation of sportsmanship, team spirit, and perseverance during this pivotal first year. Looking Ahead Coach Lear is optimistic about the team’s future: “It’s the most rewarding thing to see a player improve.” With a solid group of returners and increased interest among the student body, the program is expected to grow in skill and support. A key offseason focus will be on building stamina and conditioning, areas that had to be skipped last year due to the program’s late formation.
