Despite a season filled with adversity, the Springfield Millers Girls Basketball team showcased resilience, heart, and competitive spirit under the leadership of Head Coach Joe Williamson. The Millers returned to the state tournament once again, finishing with an impressive 6th-place showing—an achievement made even more remarkable given the obstacles they faced throughout the season.
Key Contributors and Standout Performers
Senior guard Darissa Romero-Ah Sam anchored the team on both ends of the floor. Named Defensive Player of the Year and selected to the 1st Team All-Conference, Darissa averaged 14.1 points, 4.7 assists, and a dominant 4.8 steals per game. Even while battling a back injury late in the season, she played through pain and remained a critical leader on the court.
Sailor Hall also earned 1st Team All-Conference honors and led the team in scoring with 16.0 points per game, adding 4.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest. Her consistent offensive output kept the Millers in games all season long.
Supporting the stars were key contributors like Kuna Filipe (8.9 ppg, 6.5 reb), Onnie Woodard (7.0 ppg, 5.5 reb), and Mylah Wilson (6.3 ppg, 2.0 steals), each of whom stepped into bigger roles, especially after injuries to major players.
Overcoming Adversity
The loss of athletic post Ryan Marshall in just the second game of the season forced the team to quickly adjust. Later, when Romero-Ah Sam suffered a back injury down the stretch, the team faced another major blow. But the Millers refused to be defined by injuries.
"We had to have a 'next girl up' mentality and give no excuses," said Coach Williamson. "We showed toughness and resolve all year."
Players like Onnie Woodard stepped into starting roles, and underclassmen such as freshman Lia Jones and sophomore Kennedi Cofey grew into valuable contributors off the bench. Their development throughout the season gave the Millers depth and confidence heading into the postseason.
Senior Leadership and Program Culture
Seniors Kuna Filipe and Mylah Wilson made the most of their final year, bringing leadership, energy, and production to the team. Their presence helped steady the younger players and laid a strong foundation for the future.
Looking Ahead
The Millers were a young team this year, and Coach Williamson is optimistic about the road ahead.
"We're excited for summer basketball and next season," he said. "There is an opportunity in front of us to make a run for the title next season, and we are going to embrace it."
Offseason Goals
The focus heading into the offseason is strength and team chemistry. "We need to get stronger. We'll be in the weight room all spring and summer," said Williamson. "Every year is a different group with new dynamics, and that coming together starts right now."
