North Medford Girls Basketball: A 2025 Season of Grit, Growth, and Gritty Upsets
As the 2025 winter sports season comes to a close, few teams have demonstrated the kind of resilience, evolution, and heart seen in the North Medford High School girls basketball team under the leadership of Head Coach Tiani Tunoa. From overcoming mid-season injuries to taking down top-ranked opponents, this team defied expectations at every turn.
In our Winter Season Recap Series, Coach Tunoa reflected on a year defined by strong leadership, unexpected breakthroughs, and a group of athletes who rediscovered their passion for the game.
A Season That Surpassed Expectations
“The season went well,” Coach Tunoa shared. “We performed better than many expected us to, and our ranking didn’t truly reflect our level as a team.”
It’s not uncommon for rankings to miss the intangibles—like chemistry, hustle, and growth—and North Medford had all of those in abundance. Even while battling injuries in December that limited the squad’s depth, the team rallied and gradually found its rhythm, growing stronger and more united with each game.
One major highlight? A thrilling upset over a top-10 state-ranked team during conference play—a turning point that transformed how the team saw itself.
“That was the moment the girls realized they could compete with the best,” said Coach Tunoa. “It helped them believe in what they were capable of.”
Key Contributors: A Balanced Attack
North Medford’s success this season was a total team effort, but several players stood out for their consistent impact on the court.
Caileigh Raines emerged as one of the team’s top scorers and rebounders. “She possessed leadership that helped get the team going,” said Coach Tunoa. “She kept everyone accountable and was reliable when we needed a bucket.”
Olivia Boger brought a competitive edge that Coach Tunoa said made the team “completely different” when she was on the floor. She, too, was a dual threat in scoring and rebounding, lifting the team in critical moments.
Sophia West anchored the team’s transition game, using her defensive aggression and speed to generate fast-break opportunities.
And then there was Mariah Lane, the team’s top three-point shooter—someone who could swing momentum with a timely shot from beyond the arc. “She stepped up and hit big buckets when needed,” Coach Tunoa noted.
Rising Stars: Youth Stepping into the Spotlight
Beyond the upperclassmen, North Medford saw the emergence of some exciting underclassmen talent. Chief among them was freshman Riley Smalley, who earned a starting spot through her fierce competitiveness.
“Riley worked her way into the starting lineup and quickly became one of our most competitive players,” said Coach Tunoa. “She really stepped up.”
Another name to watch: Brianna Brownlee, whose energy and defensive presence sparked life into the team at crucial moments.
“Brianna was aggressive and brought that spark we needed,” said the coach. “Her hustle and defensive efforts really made a difference.”
The Power of Resilience
Every team faces adversity—what matters is how they respond. For North Medford, adversity became a catalyst for growth.
“Injuries forced us to rely on everyone, not just a select few,” Coach Tunoa said. “The team learned how to trust each other more. By the end of the season, they were more poised and composed under pressure.”
This mindset shift didn’t happen overnight. It was a journey—from the shaky early-season moments to the confidence and cohesion they displayed late in the year. The girls leaned on each other, adjusted roles as needed, and kept pushing.
That mental toughness was a defining feature of their campaign.
A Senior Class That Set the Standard
North Medford’s 2025 senior class was more than just experienced—it was the emotional and strategic backbone of the program.
“We had a class of nine seniors,” Coach Tunoa said. “They all led well in their roles—whether it was scoring, making hustle plays, teaching during practice, or simply being a great teammate.”
This class had been through the battles. They understood the demands of varsity basketball and brought that understanding to every practice and every game. Most importantly, they helped shape a culture of accountability, teamwork, and perseverance that younger players will now inherit.
“The senior class laid the foundation,” said Coach Tunoa. “They embraced their roles and left a standard behind.”
Building for the Future
With the seniors moving on, the next chapter begins—and Coach Tunoa is optimistic. Several returning players have now spent a year learning her system and expectations. Combine that with the young talent rising through the ranks, and the program’s trajectory looks promising.
“I’m excited to have returners who’ve already played under me and are ready to build on what we started,” said Tunoa. “We also have a lot of young, up-and-coming players with a ton of potential.”
That blend of experience and youth gives North Medford something every coach hopes for—a solid core that can grow together over the next few seasons.
The Offseason Focus: Defense and Development
With a strong foundation set, the next step is clear: refinement and growth. The upcoming offseason will be crucial for sharpening skills and raising the team’s collective intensity.
“We’re focusing heavily on defensive intensity and individual skill development,” said Coach Tunoa. “We want to elevate our pressure on the defensive end while continuing to grow each player’s skill set.”
The coaching staff is committed to ensuring that North Medford continues to evolve—not just in wins and losses, but in identity, discipline, and style of play.
Final Thoughts: A Season to Remember
The 2025 North Medford girls basketball season was about more than just the final score. It was about belief—about a group of young women discovering what they were capable of when they came together.
They faced setbacks and adversity, but came out stronger, more connected, and more confident. They beat top-ranked teams, elevated young talent, and sent off a senior class that left a lasting impact.
And perhaps most importantly, they found their love for the game again.
With the foundation laid, a promising group returning, and a coaching staff focused on growth, the future of North Medford basketball is in good hands.
