Gregori High Girls Basketball 2025 Winter Recap: Building Through Adversity, Rising Through Unity

The 2025 winter season marked a chapter of growth, grit, and resilience for the Gregori High School Varsity Girls Basketball team. Under the guidance of Head Coach Marissa Shull, the Jaguars faced a season filled with challenges but emerged stronger, more united, and poised for even greater success in the future. With a core of dedicated athletes and a coaching philosophy rooted in preparation, player development, and team culture, Gregori Girls Basketball took strides this season — not just on the scoreboard, but in the intangibles that shape great programs.

Leading the Charge: Key Contributors Drive Performance

At the heart of Gregori’s competitive campaign were several standout athletes who made significant contributions on both ends of the court. Leading the pack was junior Alanah Lopez, named CCAL MVP, whose performances throughout the season set the tone for the team. Whether scoring, defending, or creating opportunities, Lopez consistently delivered when it mattered most. Joining her in the spotlight were juniors Veronica Whitten and Audrey Pacheco, both named to the CCAL First Team. Their consistency, leadership, and all-around impact were crucial to the team’s rhythm and execution. Pacheco, in particular, also embraced an unexpected but much-needed leadership role. “Audrey stepped up in the team leadership role for us this season,” Coach Shull said. “It was unexpected and had a positive impact toward our success.” Two underclassmen also made their mark: freshman Gia Brown, who earned Honorable Mention CCAL, and fellow freshman Makayla Tran, who adjusted quickly to the speed and physicality of varsity-level play. Their early contributions promise a bright future.

Growing Pains and Grit: Battling Through a Challenging Start

The season didn’t begin the way the Jaguars had hoped. “We scheduled a tough preseason to prepare us for league and playoffs,” explained Coach Shull. “We lost some early games that we could have won in the preseason due to injuries and illness.” But adversity, rather than discouraging the team, became a catalyst for growth. With players missing time and rotations shifting, the team leaned on its depth and collective resilience. The experience forged toughness and unity — traits that would carry the Jaguars through the rest of the year.

Unsung Heroes: Stepping Into the Spotlight

While the spotlight often shines on high scorers and headline-makers, Gregori’s success was also built on the backs of those who embraced bigger roles when the team needed them most. Senior Nevaeh Campbell became a vital presence in the paint, stepping up her rebounding and interior play in key moments. “She really helped us with rebounding this season,” noted Shull. Freshmen Gia Brown and Makayla Tran, meanwhile, demonstrated maturity well beyond their years. Adjusting to varsity competition is no easy task, but these two rose to the occasion — not just as players, but as teammates who contributed to the team’s chemistry and energy. This internal development was a hallmark of Gregori’s season — young players growing quickly, veterans embracing leadership, and the entire roster pushing one another to improve.

Facing Adversity With Positivity and Purpose

Injuries, illness, and tough losses are part of every season, but how a team responds to those moments defines its character. For Gregori, the answer was clear: they responded with resilience and positivity. “Our team handled adversity really well,” said Coach Shull. “They stayed positive, and pushed through some of the hard games knowing we weren’t at full speed. They picked each other up when needed.” This mindset not only helped the team weather storms but also strengthened their bonds. That sense of unity was often just as critical as any game plan or strategy.

Looking Ahead: A Promising Future Fueled by Passion

Even with the season now behind them, the buzz around Gregori’s girls basketball program is louder than ever. Much of that excitement stems from what’s to come. “We are returning our top three juniors, two sophomores, and three freshmen next year,” said Shull. “I’ve been told there are some good incoming freshmen as well.” That mix of returning experience and promising new talent makes for an exciting equation. But what excites Coach Shull the most isn’t just the skill level — it’s the mindset. “I’m excited about the returning group because of their love for each other on and off the court,” she said. “They want to be challenged and pushed, and want to do their best for each other, and for the goals we set as a team.” To meet that challenge head-on, Gregori will be taking on its toughest preseason schedule yet. Far from being intimidated, the players are embracing the opportunity to compete against top-tier opponents — a testament to their growth and ambition.

The Next Step: Sharpening Skills in the Offseason

As the team looks to build on this season’s progress, the offseason will be key. Coach Shull has a clear plan in place for player development, with a focus on both individual skills and basketball IQ. “In the offseason we will be working on fundamental skills, agility, dribbling, shooting, footwork, and basketball IQ,” she said. It’s a comprehensive approach designed to elevate each athlete’s game and build an even stronger team for next winter. With returning leaders, hungry newcomers, and a staff focused on details and development, the Gregori program appears poised to take another leap.

A Season to Remember — and a Launchpad for More

While this season might not have ended with a championship, it was undeniably a success in other meaningful ways. The Jaguars grew closer, tougher, and smarter — and they discovered that with the right mix of effort, attitude, and trust, they could compete with anyone. Coach Shull’s leadership and vision have laid the foundation for a new era of Gregori girls basketball — one defined by resilience, mutual respect, and a shared desire to grow. From standout performers like Alanah Lopez and Audrey Pacheco to rising stars like Gia Brown and Makayla Tran, the future looks incredibly bright.
