North High Cheer Finishes Best Season Yet with Spirit, Skill, and Strength

The 2024–2025 school year marked a record-setting and emotionally charged journey for the North High School Cheer Team, under the passionate leadership of Head Coach Chiann Ringer. What started as a promising season blossomed into one of the most successful years in program history, thanks to the tireless effort, perseverance, and unity of a team built on dedication and heart. From Friday night lights to high-stakes competition mats, North Cheer didn't just show up—they showed out.

Senior Leadership at Its Finest

Much of this season’s success can be attributed to the tremendous leadership of seniors Alexa Fletcher and Angel Patino, who didn’t just perform on the mat—they uplifted the entire squad. “As seniors, they take their leadership roles seriously,” Coach Ringer said. “They are our biggest cheerleaders to the team—always uplifting and motivating others to achieve their goals.” Joining them at the helm were junior captains Mollie McKinley and Sarah Barboza, the first non-seniors to take on such a pivotal role. Their contributions weren’t limited to encouragement; they were hands-on with choreography, active in organizing team events, and led by example in both skill and commitment. Their leadership marked a new standard for underclassmen stepping up—and delivering.

A Year of Firsts and Finishes

The 2024–2025 season was a marathon of achievement and growth. Cheer is a year-round sport, and the team kicked off with a strong showing during the football season, showcasing their school pride and energy on the sidelines. Basketball season took the squad on the road, culminating in a trip to the State Championships, further demonstrating their unwavering support for North’s athletic programs. Then came what Coach Ringer calls their favorite time of year—competition season—and the Bulldogs delivered. Out of five competitions, North Cheer claimed 1st place three times and secured 3rd place in Finals, marking their best competition season to date. Though the team was initially heartbroken by their third-place finish due to a minor technical deduction, the results only fueled their motivation. “This was nothing but motivation for next year,” said Ringer. “They know what they’re capable of now and they’re ready to run with it.”

Standouts Who Soared

Every member of the squad played a role in the team’s impressive performance, but three athletes in particular showed remarkable growth and dedication: Diora Perez, Sydney Villa, and Madison Sargent. Diora and Sydney set a bold goal last season—to master a kick full basket, a high-level stunt rarely seen at the high school level. Through disciplined training and safe progression, both athletes achieved this milestone and proudly competed with it during the Finals. Madison Sargent’s story is one of grit and redemption. After not making the team initially, she reached out for feedback, put in the work, and returned stronger—earning her place and ultimately becoming a key contributor. “She excelled so much this year and became a very valuable teammate to everyone,” said Ringer. These stories highlight a team culture where resilience is celebrated, and hard work pays off.

Rising to Every Challenge

High-level cheerleading comes with its share of physical demands and high-pressure moments. The North squad faced these challenges head-on. “Injuries are difficult. In high-level cheerleading, they happen unfortunately,” Ringer admitted. But instead of crumbling, the team pulled together. Substitutions were made, routines were reworked, and trust was built even stronger in those trying times. The team also learned to bounce back from emotional setbacks. After dominating much of the season with top placements, their third-place finish at Finals was a tough pill to swallow—but it didn’t diminish their incredible progress or their potential. “These athletes are already ready to come back better,” said Ringer.

A Look Ahead

With such a successful season behind them, Coach Ringer is optimistic about the future. Entering their third year under her leadership, the program is not only growing in skill but also in size. “I’m very thankful to have such a strong, dedicated, and motivated group of athletes who strive for more each year,” she said. That hunger for success is evident as nearly 100 students have expressed interest in trying out for next season—a testament to the team’s rising reputation. But with growth comes new challenges.

Offseason Focus: Fundraising and Access

As Ringer eyes the next season, her biggest concern isn’t finding talent—it’s funding. With uniforms costing approximately $300 per athlete, not including travel, competition fees, and other essentials, ensuring every deserving athlete can participate is no easy feat. “Unfortunately, funds aren’t available for that many kids at the moment,” she explained. “Fundraising is extremely difficult.” Her goal for the offseason is to secure the resources needed to expand the team while maintaining the high standards that brought them so far this year. Final Thoughts

Coach Chiann Ringer has built something special at North High School. The 2024–2025 season wasn't just about trophies—it was about growth, belief, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. From senior leaders to first-time competitors, every member of the team contributed to a legacy that’s just beginning. With a deeply talented group returning, a powerful support system, and a coach who believes in every one of them, North Cheer is poised to soar even higher in 2026. In the words of Coach Ringer: “They know what they’re capable of now—and they’re ready to run with it.”
