Canyon Lake Girls Basketball 2025 Season Recap: Leadership, Growth, and a Bright Future Ahead
By Winter Sports Recap Team
As the final buzzer sounded on the 2025 winter basketball season, the Canyon Lake High School Girls Basketball program closed out a year defined by grit, leadership, and a hungry group of young athletes poised to carry the torch forward. Under the guidance of Head Coach Char Hutson, the Lady Hawks made a strong impression, despite facing one of the toughest districts in their region.
From standout individual efforts to the emergence of promising new talent, Coach Hutson’s squad not only competed with heart but laid the groundwork for an exciting future.
Stars of the Court: Leadership and Hustle
Every successful team is built on the efforts of key contributors, and this year, Reece Coburn, Mya Vorhis, and Marley Christian were the driving forces behind the Lady Hawks’ on-court identity.
Reece Coburn, the team’s point guard and Offensive MVP, was the engine of the offense. “She was the sole ball handler for the majority of our season with few exceptions,” said Coach Hutson. “She ran everything, facilitated, and was a positive influence to the younger girls on the team.” Coburn’s calm leadership and vision helped stabilize the team’s play during both smooth stretches and difficult moments.
Mya Vorhis, crowned Defensive MVP, made life difficult for opposing teams with her relentless energy. “She’s someone no one wanted to go up against,” said Hutson. “She went after every loose ball, rebounded every chance she could, blocked shots, and stole the ball if it was anywhere close.” Her high motor and tenacity anchored Canyon Lake’s defense.
But it was Marley Christian, the team’s Overall MVP, who brought the full package. “Marley was a key player on both sides of the floor,” Hutson explained. “She gave 100% every game, played every position necessary, and did whatever was needed for her team.” That team-first attitude made Christian a cornerstone of the Lady Hawks' identity.
A Team That Grew Together
While the team’s success was built on strong senior leadership, it was also fueled by the development of younger players, none more notable than sophomore Makenna Myers.
“As a sophomore who started for us, Makenna had a huge role to fill,” Coach Hutson noted. “She has had extreme growth since stepping into our gym and is an athlete who day in and day out is trying to be the best that she can be.” That dedication paid off with a well-deserved Honorable Mention in district play, showcasing her ability to rise to the moment.
With a small, younger bench, Coach Hutson emphasized the importance of readiness throughout the season. “There were a lot of kids who had to stay ready and trust their abilities,” she said. “You never knew when your name was going to be called.”
This mindset fostered resilience across the board, especially valuable in a district as competitive as Canyon Lake’s. Despite tough matchups and pressure-packed moments, the team consistently responded with heart and unity.
Seniors Set the Standard
The 2025 senior class played a pivotal role—not just in performance, but in building the team’s culture and mindset. Coach Hutson described them as “the backbone of the team mentally and physically.”
Each senior brought something unique:
Reece was a calming, uplifting presence who led by example.
Mya energized the team with humor and effort, especially on the defensive end.
Marley brought unwavering consistency and selflessness, filling whatever role the team needed.
Their contributions set a powerful example for the next generation of Canyon Lake players.
Looking Ahead: Youth, Energy, and Excitement
With the graduation of half the varsity team, the 2026 squad will be significantly younger, but Coach Hutson is excited about what’s to come.
“There are a lot of young girls who will be stepping into those positions,” she said. “We’ll only have two seniors next year, so there’s a lot of growth to be had.”
That doesn’t mean lowered expectations. If anything, the returning varsity players and incoming JV standouts are more motivated than ever. “The returning girls are hungry to step up,” said Hutson. “And the JV girls that will be moved up are excited and already working hard to be as ready as possible.”
What sets this upcoming group apart? According to their coach, it’s a rare combination of coachability, work ethic, and fun energy. “They’re willing to put in the work and be coached—and they’re a lot of fun to be around at the same time.”
Offseason Focus: Defense First
While Canyon Lake saw offensive talent shine this past season, Coach Hutson knows that defense is where games are truly won.
“We are pushing a huge emphasis on being good defenders going forward,” she said. “There will be off days offensively, but you can always give your all on defense.”
That commitment to defensive intensity will be the cornerstone of offseason workouts, setting the tone for a team identity built around effort, communication, and toughness.
