Austin Crockett Girls' Basketball: Laying the Foundation for a Breakout Year

The 2025 winter basketball season for the Austin Crockett High School Girls’ team may not have ended with a playoff run, but it was a season filled with growth, excitement, and a glimpse into a promising future. Under the guidance of Head Coach Jennifer Shuttlesworth, the Lady Cougars not only improved upon last year’s performance but also developed a strong identity built on teamwork, athleticism, and resilience. With a 5th-place finish in district play and a winning overall record, the Lady Cougars have plenty to celebrate—and even more to look forward to as they prepare for a highly anticipated 2026 campaign.

A Team Built on Key Contributors

Crockett’s success this season was anchored by a balanced core of talent, with contributions coming from all over the floor. At the center of it all was sophomore Lauren Smith, who led the team in points, steals, and blocked shots. “Lauren was the driving force of our offense,” Coach Shuttlesworth said, a statement that reflects both her scoring touch and defensive presence. Also making a significant impact was junior Aliyah Smith, who led the team in assists and was second in steals. A floor general in every sense, Aliyah brought consistency and leadership on both ends of the court. “She was our stability on offense and defense,” said Shuttlesworth. In the paint, junior Lola Osaigbovo stood tall—literally and figuratively—averaging a double-double while leading the team in rebounds and finishing second in scoring. Her interior dominance was complemented by sophomore Sadie Peyton, who provided scoring, rebounding, and elite defense. Together, these athletes formed a versatile and athletic core that could score, defend, and adapt to any game situation.

Peaks, Setbacks, and Season-Defining Moments

The season got off to a strong start with a string of wins that helped build confidence in a still-young team. One of the year’s high points came early when the Lady Cougars won their own Crockett Tournament, a major morale boost that solidified their status as a team to watch in the district. However, the road wasn’t without its bumps. Losses to Cedar Creek in the district opener and a tough tournament loss to Navasota proved to be significant turning points. These games not only halted momentum but also challenged the team’s confidence. “They were negative turning points that we struggled to overcome,” admitted Coach Shuttlesworth. “Although we definitely learned valuable lessons in both games.”

Rising Stars and Player Development

One of the most exciting storylines of the season was the continued evolution of the team’s inside game. Building on what had been a strength in the previous year, the trio of Lola Osaigbovo, Sadie Peyton, and Reality took it to the next level. Their quickness, athleticism, and defensive tenacity made them a matchup nightmare for opponents. “All three are very quick and athletic. They all defend very well, are excellent rebounders, and have the potential to fill up a scoring line,” said Shuttlesworth. Their collective development gave Crockett a solid foundation in the paint and set the tone for many of their wins.

Responding to Adversity

Every season comes with its share of challenges, and for Crockett, this year was no exception. Injuries, tough losses, and high-pressure moments tested the team’s resolve. However, rather than allowing those setbacks to derail their progress, the Lady Cougars used them as fuel for growth. “With intentional efforts at overcoming these obstacles, our setbacks helped us to learn a lot about ourselves and become stronger,” Shuttlesworth said. While the obstacles may have cost them a playoff berth, the lessons learned will pay dividends in seasons to come.

Senior Leadership and a Lasting Legacy

The 2025 team was led by a single senior, Aubriana Arispe, who left an indelible mark on the program. As the team’s speaking captain and starting point guard, Aubriana brought stability, energy, and leadership both on and off the court. “She brought great energy every day and improved so much in her senior year,” said Shuttlesworth. “Her steady leadership and improved confidence as a PG were invaluable assets to our season.” While her graduation leaves a gap, her example sets the standard for younger players poised to step into leadership roles next year.

A Bright Future on the Horizon

Despite narrowly missing the playoffs, the excitement around the program is palpable, and for good reason. The Lady Cougars will return six of their seven full-time players next season, many of whom will be entering their third year of varsity play. This level of experience is rare and invaluable, particularly in high school basketball. “We are experienced, athletic, and confident,” said Shuttlesworth. “With strong guard play and an excellent post game, it should be a fun season!” This experienced core, paired with the hunger to improve, gives Crockett an excellent shot at postseason success in 2026.

Offseason Focus: Sharpening the Edges

Looking ahead, Coach Shuttlesworth has her eyes on a few key areas for development. Improving perimeter shooting, enhancing the team’s ability to finish at the rim in various ways, and tightening up defensive schemes are all priorities. These refinements could be the difference between just missing the playoffs and making a deep postseason run next year.

Final Thoughts

The 2025 season was a testament to the growth of a team with heart, grit, and vision. The Austin Crockett Lady Cougars may have fallen just short of the playoffs, but they’ve laid a strong foundation for success. With a veteran core returning, a coach focused on continual improvement, and a program culture built on resilience and teamwork, the future is bright. As Coach Shuttlesworth and her team head into the offseason, the message is clear: this team isn’t done. They’re just getting started.
