Austin High School Football: A 2025 Season of Growth, Grit, and a Glimpse of What’s to Come
The 2025 football season for Austin High School was one marked by moments of triumph, lessons learned, and the unmistakable presence of a team determined to rise. Under the leadership of Head Coach and Athletic Coordinator Jason Cecil, the Maroons battled their way through a competitive schedule, earned a playoff berth, and set the foundation for an even stronger campaign in the coming year.
Coach Cecil sat down with us to reflect on the season’s key highlights, the players who left a lasting mark, and what lies ahead for this proud program.
Senior Leadership That Made a Statement
A strong senior class was at the heart of this season’s success, setting the tone with leadership, work ethic, and playmaking ability. Four names stood out above the rest.
Wide receiver Bryson Batts, now committed to the Army, was a consistent threat and a leader on and off the field. Offensive lineman Preston Perkins, headed to UTEP, anchored the line with both strength and intelligence. On the defensive side, linebacker Will Peeler and defensive end Lawson Stuess were relentless forces, both physically and vocally guiding the defense through challenges.
“These young men were tremendous leaders for our team,” Coach Cecil said. “They’ll be very tough to replace, not just because of what they did on the field, but because of how they carried themselves every day.”
A Season of Highs, Lows, and Hard-Fought Progress
The Maroons experienced a season that Coach Cecil described as “filled with ups and downs.” Despite inconsistencies, the team reached the playoffs—an accomplishment that marks continued growth and validates the effort of the players and staff. Still, there’s an understanding that to truly compete with the best in their district and beyond, Austin High must elevate its game.
“We made the playoffs, which was a success,” Coach Cecil noted. “But we must perform better against the upper echelon teams in our district and in the playoffs.”
A defining moment came in a hard-fought win over district rival Bowie, a game that Coach Cecil highlighted as a major turning point. “That was a big win for our program,” he said—a contest that showcased the team’s resilience and potential when it all clicks.
Rising Stars Take the Stage
While the senior class rightly earned accolades, the 2025 season also revealed a number of younger players ready to take the torch.
Running back Reid Childers emerged as a legitimate backfield threat, bringing a physical presence and consistent production to the offense. Wide receivers Logan Davis and Enzo Hoopman both displayed “big play ability,” according to Cecil. These explosive playmakers showed flashes of brilliance throughout the year and are expected to be key pieces of the offense moving forward.
“They need more touches,” Cecil emphasized, hinting at a more dynamic, multi-dimensional offensive approach next season.
Responding to Adversity: A Test of Character
Injuries, tough losses, and pressure-packed moments are inevitable in high school football, and this season tested Austin’s resolve more than once.
“Our team handled adversity well,” Cecil said. “But we must become more consistent in execution.”
That theme of consistency will carry over into offseason work as the program pushes toward a higher level of play. Execution—particularly in critical moments—will be essential if Austin hopes to take the next step in competing with perennial contenders.
Farewell to a Powerful Senior Class
The graduating class leaves behind a meaningful legacy. Bryson Batts, Preston Perkins, Will Peeler, and Lawson Stuess were more than just stat-sheet leaders—they were cultural pillars. They brought energy, toughness, and accountability, setting a standard that will shape the identity of the program going forward.
“We lost a great senior class,” said Cecil. “But the seniors-to-be have shown to be good players and great leaders. We will lean on them to lead the way in changing the culture of the program.”
A Bright Future Takes Shape
Despite the losses, Coach Cecil is enthusiastic about what’s next. The upcoming senior group is already making its presence known, and several returning players are poised for breakout seasons.
The quarterback room, in particular, looks promising. “Our QBs should be dynamic and a strength,” said Cecil. While no names were mentioned, it’s clear the staff believes they have the tools under center to guide an explosive offense.
On the defensive side, linebackers Ethan Khale and John Burns stand out as physical, intelligent players who will anchor the unit. Their growth will be vital as the Maroons look to tighten up the defense and become more dominant at the point of attack.
Offseason Priorities: Plug the Gaps, Sharpen the Edge
Like any successful program, the offseason is where much of the transformation takes place. For Austin, several key areas are under the microscope.
“We must improve in covering the deep balls on defense,” Cecil explained. “We need to get a more consistent pass rush. Our offensive line will have to grow up fast.”
These points of emphasis reflect both tactical needs and the natural challenges that come with replacing experienced seniors. With a strong returning cast and a clear development plan, the coaching staff is ready to mold the next group into impact players.
Building More Than Wins
While wins and losses measure success on the scoreboard, Coach Cecil’s broader mission is to build a team culture centered on accountability, toughness, and growth, on and off the field.
That culture was evident throughout the 2025 season in how the team responded to adversity, embraced rising talent, and leaned into every opportunity to compete. With another playoff run under their belt and a group of young leaders ready to take the reins, Austin High Football is positioning itself to be a program to watch in the coming years.
