The California Academy of Math and Science (CAMS) has a long-standing reputation for academic excellence and a strong focus on STEM education. As the school year begins, all eyes are on the CAMS team and their upcoming journey. We had the opportunity to speak with Coach Harry Patrick Bugarin about his expectations, the team's strengths, and their preparations for the upcoming year.
Here's what he had to say.
Q: What are your expectations for the CAMS team this year?
A: Our expectations are high as always. We have a strong team with dedicated and talented players. Our goal is to win the league championship and go as far as we can in the state playoffs. We have a good mix of experienced players and promising newcomers, and I believe we have what it takes to achieve our goals.
Q: What are the team's strengths?
A: One of our biggest strengths is our defense. We have a solid backline and midfield that work seamlessly together to prevent opponents from scoring. Our team's motto is "Defense wins championships," and I truly believe that. Additionally, our team has a strong work ethic and a never-give-up attitude. We have players who are willing to put in the extra work and effort to improve themselves and help the team.
Q: Are there any key players to watch out for this year?
A: We have a strong core of seniors who have been with us for a few years now, and they will definitely be key players to watch out for. Our captain and center back, Emily Rodriguez, is a defensive powerhouse and a great leader on the field. On the attack, we have Mariah Garcia and Julia Kim, who have both shown great progress and development in their skills and will be key players in our offense this year.
Q: How is the team preparing for the new season?
A: We have been working hard in the off-season with conditioning and tactical training to improve our fitness and overall gameplay. We have also scheduled some friendly matches with other local teams to fine-tune our strategies and see where we stand against other competition. Team chemistry is also important, so we have organized team-building activities to strengthen our bond on and off the field.
Q: How are you managing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic?
A: The pandemic has definitely presented challenges for us, but we are adapting and making the best of the situation.
