As the spring season approaches, teams are gearing up for another exciting year of high school baseball. One team to keep an eye on is the Morro Bay Pirates, led by first-year varsity head coach Jarred Zill. I had the opportunity to speak with Coach Zill about his goals and expectations for the team this year, as well as the keys to their success.
First and foremost, the team's main goal for this season is to win a league title and make a strong CIF run. This is a lofty goal, but Coach Zill believes that with hard work and determination, they can achieve it. He also stressed the importance of sticking to the team's identity as a unit and playing to their strengths. This means every player committing to their role and working together towards a common goal.
One of the key factors in the team's success this year will be the leadership of the seniors. Coach Zill does not assign specific captain or leadership positions, but rather allows these roles to develop organically within the team. He constantly reminds his players that this is their team and they play for each other, not just for themselves. As a result, the players have taken ownership of the team and the goals they have set for themselves.
Being a first-year varsity head coach, Coach Zill acknowledges that he has a lot to learn about the off-the-field work required to make a successful season happen. He has had to put in a lot of time and effort outside of practice to get everything in order, but he is dedicated to making this season a success for his players. Building trust with the players has been a process, but Coach Zill believes that a good portion of the team is now fully committed to the way they are running the program.
One aspect that Coach Zill and his coaching staff heavily stress is having the right mindset and approach. They believe that having the right mentality is more important than physical tools. In fact, the players who display a strong desire to compete and battle for their team will be the ones who earn significant playing time. This mentality is instilled in the players from the beginning and it is what helps the team stand out on the field.
The Morro Bay Pirates have a roster full of talented athletes with natural movement patterns. However, not all of them have a lot of experience in baseball. This is where the coaching staff sees an opportunity for growth – improving the players' baseball IQ.
