The Kennedy High School Cougars basketball team is looking forward to a successful new season under the guidance of heralded coach Dave Domelle. The team is coming off an impressive season last year and looks to have the pieces in place to make even more noise this year. Coach Domelle has set the bar quite high for this year’s team, with goals of winning a league championship and going deep in the D3 playoffs. This year’s Cougars will be led by three stalwarts from last season in Adrian Velazquez, Will Dorsey, and Nasir Shannon. Velazquez is a 6’4” point forward who had a breakout year last season, averaging double-doubles in league play with 14 points and 13 rebounds per game. Dorsey is a 6’6” shooting guard a smooth stroke that’s difficult to defend. Shannon is a defensive specialist who has a knack for getting to the rim when needed as a scorer. The squad will welcome a new face this year in the form of Omar Mojaddidi, a 6’8” junior post player who’s already making an impact with averages of 18 points per game in the first two games of the season. Team captains Alec Velazquez and Nasir Shannon have worked hard to build team chemistry and camaraderie, hosting team meals, holiday parties, and volunteering with Toys for Tots to give back to the community. Motivating the players is one of Coach Domelle’s priorities, as he encourages players to strive for their full potential through thoughtful discussion of team goals and motivational speakers. Academics are also important for the players on the roster, as the coach prioritizes grades and makes sure to shorten practice and film study when the students start to approach finals. The Cougars’ schedule looks challenging yet exciting, with the likes of the Miramonte tournament and Dublin on the pre-season lineup. With the new strategies and plays, Coach Domelle is implementing this season, Kennedy looks to be at the forefront of skill and execution. Communication is also key for success on the court, as the team is often encouraged to be vocal and honest with each other. Fans can look forward to an entertaining and successful season for the Cougars this year, as the team has the pieces in place to make a splash in the D3 playoffs. Kennedy's size and speed will provide excitement with fast-paced games and highlight plays, and supporters will be able to participate in a winning season if they lend their vocal support. If the team can stay focused and motivated, the Kennedy High School Cougars are ready to take the league by storm.
