With the start of the basketball season, the Segerstrom High School team is on the brink of achieving something remarkable—their fourth consecutive league title and a possible CIF championship. As Coach Shonyta Pouncey explains, the key to success is the mix of experience and youth within the team.

The top returning players from last year, all of whom are starters, have worked to standout in the off season to further their usefulness for the team. Coach Pouncey also notes that a freshman player, Sasha Santos Cruz, will bring an immediate impact to the Segerstrom team. Despite a reduced practice time due to football fall sports, Pouncey believes in the team’s preparedness and the individual player’s health.

For potential team captains, Coach Pouncey looks in several qualities, most of which involve leading by example—from working hard in practice to having a positive attitude. Her current captains have proven themselves as such, and the team as a whole has a good chemistry. To further cultivate this environment, the team has played together in away games and has other non-traditional activities to build upon camaraderie.

Motivating her players to reach their full potential is an ongoing process for Coach Pouncey, from having guest speakers to monthly check-ins about individual goals. Looking at the schedule for this season, opponents Foothill, Tesoro, Los Al and Godinez will certainly present challenges, and the team continues to train and condition harder to prepare.

The team’s overall playing style warrants an aggressive defense with an up-tempo offense. Communication on the court is key to their success and Pouncey continues to stress the mental aspect of the game as well. For mandatory academic requirements, Pouncey is proud to boast the team’s collective GPA and offers study halls and other incentives to maintain the balance between sports and academics.

Finally, Coach Pouncey gives a final message to the Segerstrom fans and supporters: “The girls always with me appreciate you all for coming out.” The start of the basketball season is upon us and the Segerstrom team is geared up to try and achieve something special. With their plethora of individual talent and their united strength, the team is looking to take another step in greatness.
