As the new season approaches, Coach Annie Mortensen and the Alamosa High School volleyball team are gearing up to take on the competition. With a strong roster of returning players and some new additions, the team is ready to reach its ultimate goal of winning the state championship. Looking at the top returning players from last season, it’s clear that the team has a talented and experienced core.
Morgan Ortega, Aubrey Rothermich, Taybor Weideman, Addison Rice, Jaelin Garcia, and Lily Heersink are all starters who have played together for years. Their chemistry on and off the court is a major strength for the team, as they have developed a deep understanding of each other’s playing styles. Coach Mortensen notes that this group has played 48 matches together this summer, which showcases their commitment and dedication to improving their skills as a team.
One of these returning players, Kadie Hawkins, is a standout sophomore outside hitter with a strong presence on the court and a high IQ for the game. Coach Mortensen sees her as a potential team captain in the future, and her leadership qualities will be valuable for the team’s success this season. Despite the loss of Laci Christensen, the team’s leading kill player who tore her ACL last basketball season, the Alamosa High School volleyball team remains confident in their depth and talent.
Coach Mortensen acknowledges that injuries are a part of the game, but she and her coaching staff have worked hard to prepare the team for this season. The team’s preparation has been intense and focused, with the coach bringing in her mother, Lindy Mortensen, who has been the head volleyball coach at Adams State for 18 years.
The girls have been pushed harder than ever before, with structured practices and a goal to be the hardest-working team in the state. This type of dedication and discipline will surely pay off for the team in the long run. The team faces a tough schedule this season, with strong non-league opponents and two tournaments – the Eaton Pre-Season tournament and the Sterling End-of-Season tournament – that will test their abilities.
However, Coach Mortensen and her team are ready to take on any challenge that comes their way. They see these games as an opportunity to showcase their skills and continue learning and improving as a team. A major focus for the team this season is the mental aspect of the game.
