As the new high school basketball season approaches, Albuquerque High School’s head coach Teri Morrison, and her team are gearing up for another exciting journey on the court. To secure the district championship and advance to the Pit for a chance to play for a state championship, the Albuquerque High Bulldogs are ready to bring their A-game and make their mark in the upcoming season. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Morrison proudly named four key players who will make a significant impact on the team this year. Junior Kaelynn Ashley, senior Riah Valles, junior Maliyah Lee, and sophomore Zaiyah Hawley are all back on the court with their impressive skill sets, unwavering work ethic, and a sense of adventure when they play. These players have proven to be standouts in the previous season and are ready to bring even more to the table this year. But it’s not just about the returning players; Coach Morrison also has high expectations for the new players on the team. She believes that eighth-grader Abrielle Pavia, who has already made a D1 commitment, and ninth-grader Layla Gonzales will make an immediate impact on the team. And keeping a close eye on these new players is injured junior Savannah Combs who will be returning in January. With a roster full of talented players, the Albuquerque High Bulldogs are a force to be reckoned with. Creating a strong team dynamic is important for Coach Morrison, and she is always on the lookout for potential team captains. When choosing team captains, Coach Morrison looks for qualities such as leadership, commitment, and a positive attitude. This season, eighth-grader Abrielle Pavia and ninth-grader Layla Gonzales have stepped up to fill these roles, with injured junior Savannah Combs also in the running for captaincy once she returns to the court. These young players have already shown great potential and are ready to take on the responsibility of leading their team to victory. Motivating players to push themselves to their full potential is a crucial aspect of being a coach, and Coach Morrison has a unique approach to this. She believes in focusing on each player as an individual and promoting a player-led team. By establishing a strong foundation of personal and team values, Coach Morrison can inspire her players to give their best on and off the court. The biggest challenge for Coach Morrison heading into the new season is finding the balance between rigorous training and injury prevention.
