With the spring season quickly approaching, the Beverly Hills High School softball team is gearing up for another season of hard work and dedication. Coach Ricky Monjaraz, who has been coaching for over 10 years, sat down with us to discuss his expectations for his team this year.
When asked about his overall goals for the team, Coach Monjaraz emphasized that their main focus is to do better in the playoffs than they did last year. With only two seniors leaving, the team has a lot of returning players and a few freshmen bringing new talent to the team. However, Coach Monjaraz also acknowledged that softball is not a big sport in Beverly Hills, and they are trying to build a stronger program to attract more players.
In order to achieve success this season, Coach Monjaraz highlighted two key factors: communication and hustle. He expressed that communication is crucial both on and off the field, and the team needs to be vocal and connected in order to make plays and minimize errors. He also emphasized the importance of hustle, as every player needs to give 100% and put in their best effort in each game.
When it comes to building team chemistry, Coach Monjaraz stresses the importance of communication yet again. He encourages his players to talk to and support each other, whether it be on the field or in difficult situations. He also stated that the team captains play a vital role in facilitating team chemistry, as they are the leaders on and off the field and can relate to their teammates on a peer level.
Coach Monjaraz's coaching philosophy centers around staying positive and having a "never give up" attitude. He believes that having a positive mindset can make all the difference, regardless of the opponent's skill level. He also reminds his players that anything can happen in a game, and they should always believe in themselves and their abilities.
The mental aspect of the game is crucial to Coach Monjaraz, as he believes that it can greatly impact how a player performs on the field. He encourages his team to stay focused and mentally in the game, as it can be the difference between a win or a loss.
He also stresses the importance of having a positive attitude and focusing on the outcome in a positive light, whether it be a win or a loss. As for a final message to the student body and supporters of the team, Coach Monjaraz asks for their continued support and to be there for the team in their upcoming games.
