As the winter season approaches, many high school sports teams are gearing up for another exciting season. And for the Beyer High School wrestling team, the goal is clear - to defend their league championship title and make a deep run in the sectional tournament. To get a better understanding of the team and what we can expect from them this year, we spoke with Coach Brian Peterson.
First, we asked Coach Peterson about the top returning players from last season. Coach Peterson shared that this year’s team has a strong core of returning wrestlers, including Andrew Peterson, Josiah Vargas, Austin Carmack, Chase Monjure, and Rowan Carmack. These wrestlers have proven themselves on the mat and are expected to be leaders for the team.
Coach Peterson also mentioned that Colton Shuckman, who took a year off, is back and eager to make an impact this season. These players have a combination of skill, experience, and determination, making them stand out in the team. With the addition of some new players to the team, we asked Coach Peterson about the potential impact they could make.
He mentioned that there are a few juniors who are new to the team but are exceptional athletes and have shown great potential in practice. He also highlighted the abilities of freshman Adrian Rivera, who has already impressed the coaches with his skills and coachability. The addition of these new players will add depth to the team and push the returning players to improve their game. In building a successful team, leadership is crucial.
We asked Coach Peterson about the qualities he looks for in potential team captains and who is currently filling those roles. He explained that in wrestling, it is important for captains to have confidence and a bit of cockiness without being arrogant. They also need to understand the importance of teamwork and leading by example. Andrew Peterson, Austin Carmack, Chase Monjure, Josiah Vargas, and Colton Shuckman are all capable of leading the team and have been providing guidance and support to their fellow teammates.
Team chemistry and camaraderie are essential for a successful sports team. Coach Peterson shared that he believes in the power of being a family and winning and losing as a team. He emphasizes this message to his players and encourages them to support each other both on and off the mat. Along with the team captains, the upperclassmen play a crucial role in building team chemistry and creating a positive environment for everyone on the team.
